SQL Server 2008 Express

    Question

  • What are the limitations of SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (what I mean, if I use it for development and testing, is there a limit on the number of users/connections/databases, before I am required to buy a full licenses of SQL Server 2008 R2)? My company has licenses of SQL Server 2005/2008, for our production applications, but I am configuring a development/testing Workstation, and would like to know if I can use SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.

  • SQL Express R2 has database size limiation of 10 GB per database although limiatioan of 1 GB of RAM and 1 CPU (processor) still applies

Unlike MSDE there is **no limit** on number of user connections (although books online says about 32767). Number of user database per instance is limited to 32767.  You can refer to maximum capacity specification http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143432.aspx

If your production enviornement is standard or enterprise then I highly recommended you use those edition for development also. Also, you can get a copy of SQL Server 2008 R2 developer edition for development purpose (around $50) (Remember developer edition can not be used in a production enviornement)
