    Thanks,

  • localdb (will be introduced as part of  SQL Server Denali ) is a minified version of SQL Express that require less number of pre-req to install and offers a fast, zero-configuration installation

So (to me) it is still a SQL Express engine (but easy to use) so differences between express and  SQL Server compact are still there.

More on Denali Express localdb can be found here on the recent official SQL express blog

  • Hi,

Much appreciate for your Curiosity about latest technology..

Microsoft has introduced SQL Server Express LocalDB with SQL Server 2011, Denali CTP3 release to especially application programmers who do not want to deal with SQL Server administration. Programmers are free to use this light-weight of SQL Server Express, SQL Server Express LocalDB as a database for their applications.

SQL Server Express LocalDB requires no configuration during installation which makes it a perfect database platform for new programmers and programmers that do not deal with database management issues. LocalDB installation is fast and easy. The LocalDB requirements or pre-requisites are minimal.

Programmers can manage SQL Server Express LocalDB using new LocalDBManager.exe utility.

The SQL Server Express 2011 LocalDB enables developers directly connect to a SQL Server database. And programmers can easily write to SQL database files and read from SQL Server database tables without dealing with the management of a SQL Server instance on their local machine.

Since SQL Server Express LocalDB is installed with minimum management specifications and excluding many SQL Server services, the LocalDB database platform is really a lightweight database application which powers developers. Although LocalDB excludes many SQL Server features, the programmability features are fully covered and installed by the installation wizard.

I got the above information from Internet ,Hope this will help

  • I'm trying to test the LocalDB

The first thing I realized is the management utility is not LocalDBManager.exe

The SQL Server LocalDB management utility is SqlLocalDB.exe and help option shows that the command arguments have some small differences.

    Can someone comment on this?

LocalDBManager.exe was the original name of the tool. Just before shipping CTP3 we decided to change the name to SqlLocalDB.exe, since LocalDBManager.exe seemed a little bit over the top for a simple command line tool. "Manager" part of the name suggests something much more comprehensive than SqlLocalDB.exe, something like the old SQL Server Enterprise Manager or IIS Manager.

Unfortunately some of the documentation was not updated in time to reflect the name change. We fixed it soon after the CTP3 release, but the retired name was repeated by a few sources by then and it still surfaces from time to time. and that's the secret of LocalDBManager.exe :-)
