SQL 2005 SP3 failed to install on Reporting Services RRS feed

  • Question

  • I installed SP3 on my SQL Server 2005 EE and Reporting Services was the only component which got an error during the installation. All components now have SP3 except Reporting Services, which is not working anymore.

I'm able to see SP3 for all components through Programs and Features (I'm running W2k8).
But there is no option to remove them.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 Readme Files says:

"After SQL Server 2005 SP3 has been applied, it cannot be removed without
    uninstalling the entire product."

This is end of the SP3 installation log:

  • The log file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\RS9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_rs.msp.log" should contain more detailed information as to why this failed. Open the log file and search for "return value 3". A message describing the error should be near the location where "return value 3" exists.

  • Thanks for your reply, Jeff.

The log pasted is exacly the log file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\RS9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_rs.msp.log.

The message describing the error near "return value 3" is:

"Error 29528. The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Setting reporting service and share point exclusion path. The error is: Fatal error during installation."

Is it something related to IIS 7? I found the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920803 but I'm running Windows Server 2008.

Thank you again for your attention,

  • Hove you configured IIS correctly?

Did you follow the procedures in:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb630430(SQL.90).aspx

They say for Vista, but they apply to Windows Server 2008 also.

  • HI,

Could you check is website named 'default web site' is available or not ? If not then create it under port 80. Stop the website named Sharepoint (If any ... might be running under port 80).
    Now proceed with SP3 setup.

  • Hi,

I solved it by stopping the defualt web site in IIS admin. Applied the SP3 and started the Default web site AND the SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) in Services.

    Best regards

  • Hello,

Thank you, this solution worked for me too when applying the SP3.
I did not have any default website, but stopping all my websites and applying the SP3 again succesfully worked.

btw I did not find the "return value 3" in the log but I found the same line as your :

Error 29528. The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Setting reporting service and share point exclusion path. The error is: Fatal error during installation

This worked for me too!  Thanks!  I had trying for several hours to apply SP4 to the SQL 2005 server.
