“ERROR [08S01] [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Communication link failure”

    Question

  • We have an application the runs fine for the majority of the time, but periodically individual users will get “ERROR [08S01] [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Communication link failure” and will be forced to restart their application. The application from end is running within a Citrix environment.

We're running SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2012R2.

We don't see any errors or indications of problems in the SQL Server logs or in the Windows Event log on the SQL Server.

Can you please provide any advice on how to troubleshoot this issue? I've found a number of older articles and blog posts but nothing that appears relevant to 2012.

  • That is a generic networking error. Basically your connection was dropped due to packet loss or network drop or something in Network layer between your application and SQL Server. And application was not able to recover or re-open a new connection ( some applications such as JDE, not sure about yours require persistent connection and are not able to recover from connection drops)

For something like this you would need to involve your networking/sysadmin team to help your troubleshoot, I am sure they have tools to see where the connection drop is occurring.
