existing installation was from an MSI file that was not named sqlncli.msi RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try to install the Management tools for sql server 08 (basic or complete) I keep getting existing installation was from an MSI file that was not named sqlncli.msi.

I have tried to install SP1 and SP2 for sql server 08 and I keep getting "There are no SQL Server Instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer"

I have unistalled Sql Server 08 several times, cleaned the registry using FixCleaner and I keep getting to the same place.

I am using windows 7 pro, I am loading SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard (x86, x64, ia64) - DVD (English).  I have tried both x86 and x64.  I have the same problem with SQLExpress 2008.

When I bring up VS 2010 I can connect to my instance using server explorer.

If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  • whats the exact error message? Could you please upload setup logs from c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\ folder to some location.

Also, go to "add/remove" program > select SQL Server Native Client and remove it.. try again.
If above does not work then setup media might be having corruption.

  • Hi gctdev,

It seems that some operations were blocked. This issue might be caused by other applications, especially Anti-Virus software. Since installation has to retrieve some information from system, if we have installed Anti-Virus software, this request might be blocked and this issue might occur.

For troubleshooting, please close all other applications, especially Anti-Virus software, and try again.

If anything is unclear, please let me know.

  • Okay this has gone on long enough.

I have tried several different medias and I wind up in the same spot

    1. I install and the native client gets installed

    2. I uninstall the native client and install the management tools, the native client is again loaded and again it fails with An attempt was made to install (or update) SQL Server Native Client on a computer where SQL Server Native Client is already installed

    This has gone beyond frustrating.

Hopefully we can resolve this isuue.

    Thanks

  • This problem was resolved by copying the .net framework 3.5 for 64 bit to the .net framework 3.5 for x86.  Unistalling native client is useless when you run the install it automatically puts back the native client, then looks for .net framework 3.5 for x86.

Microsoft you have aproblem with the 64 bit install for sql server it would be nice if you fix it.

Sorry Microsoft not impressed this time with your install process or your ability to debug this issue.

  • I encountered the same issue to apply SP1 on SQL 2008 R2 on x64 Windows 2003 server. I added SQL Service account to local admin group per http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqlsetupandupgrade/thread/92a5b4fa-8e36-47bf-be94-123a75d5b02f. I also tried moving the config file per https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/431591/sql-server-2008-sp1-failed.

I was able to apply the SP1 successfully with the first solution, then I removed the SQL Service account from Local Admin group without any issue.

  • In my case uninstalling .NET 3.5 and re-installing it helped.
