Can we implement Azure SQL Warehouse (MPP) as source for MDX (MOLAP) model in IaaS VM? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am looking for the best practices for critical production environment with Terabyte scale MDX (MOLAP) model having Azure SQL Warehouse as a data source. Is it technically productive thing to use AZURE SQL WAREHOUSE as data source for cube running on a different VM(IaaS)? We are compelled by model size, hierarchies and custom rollup operations etc. to go for MDX model rather choosing tabular. I really appreciate your valuable suggestions!

  • Hi Pavan Kumar Agnigothram,

In short, if you are using SQL Server Analysis Service on-premise, it does not support the Azure SQL Data Warehouse as Data Source in Multidimensional model.

If are using Azure SSAS, we are able to use Azure SQL Data Warehouse as Source in Multidimensional model

    See:

Supported Data Sources (SSAS - Multidimensional)

Data sources supported in Azure Analysis Services

    This answer is COMPLETELY INCORRECT!!!

If you look at the first link you will see that Azure SQL Data Warehouse is in the list of supported data sources. If you need Azure SQL DataWarehouse for your relational data warehouse then it is entirely reasonable to use it from either SSAS on Prem or in an IaaS VM. It won't affect your cube query speed if you are using MOLAP storage, but if you need Azure SQL DW for other parts of your ETL then it should work fine.
