Receiving error 0x84B20001 while installing SP1 for SQL Server 2008 R2 64-bit

Question
-
I have tried the suggested workarounds/solutions found in other threads/forums and none of them have worked.
Here is my info: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (X64) Apr 2 2010 15:48:46 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7600: ) (Hypervisor)
I downloaded SQLServer2008R2SP1-KB2528583-x64-ENU.exe found here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26727
When I try to install Service Pack 1, I get the below error:
TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
------------------------------SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
A failure was detected for a previous installation, patch, or repair for instance 'RETEST' during configuration for features [SQL_Replication_Core_Inst,SQL_Engine_Core_Inst,MPT_AGENT_CORE_CNI,SQL_FullText_Adv,]. In order to apply this patch package (KB2528583), you must resolve any issues with the previous operation that failed. View the summary.txt log to determine why the previous operation failed.

I tried doing a repair on the SQL Server installation, but but parts of the repair process failed. I have attached the log below. Thanks for your help!

Hello,
If you can do that, is better.
Make sure you remove all sql server programs. Verify using Control Panel. Delete SQL Server directories from Program Files.
Hope this helps.

Hi BlueScreen00,
This is apprently a known bug that is discussed here.
Workaround:
To work around this bug is as follow:
Step 0. If you have Visual Studio 2008 SP1 installed, you MUST first remove "Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 <Language>" via Add/Remove Programs as described in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/970876. (It will get re-installed later during the repair; this works around yet another bug in SQL Server 2008's installer.)
Step 1. Download and run the original self-extracting installation of SQL Server 2008. If you have installation media, you can use the "SQL Server Installation Center" option in your Start menu.
Step 2. Choose Maintenance > Repair. When asked what to repair, choose "<<Repair shared components only>>", then let the repair complete. Then close the SQL Server Installation Center. (You shouldn't have to repair any instances.)
Step 3. You should now be able to run the SP1 installer.
Good luck! Here's hoping that they rewrite the entire installer in 2010.Regards,

Hello,
Please try to repair the instance with the following procedure:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc646006(v=sql.105).aspx
If the repair process is not successful, please share with us the summary.txt log file again.

Hope this helps.

Hello,
Based on these error messages is better if you uninstall those 3 features and reinstall them again. The instance you have installed was not installed properly.
Hope this helps.

Alberto Morillo

Regarding the Database Engine Services feature.... isn't this basically SQL Server itself? Wouldn't I have to totally uninstall SQL Server and then reinstall it?Tuesday, July 31, 2012 1:19 PM

Hello,
If you can do that, is better.
Make sure you remove all sql server programs. Verify using Control Panel. Delete SQL Server directories from Program Files.
Hope this helps.

Alberto Morillo
