  • Hi Tmg,

You can download SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with Management Tools from this link

If you want Management Studio alone, you can download from the below link

  • It is available as part of your SQL Server installation software. What are you trying to do? Just install Management Studio on a PC or install the full blown SQL Server on a PC?

  • Hi tmg7156,

What's the edition of SQL Server installed on your computer?

If it is SQL Server 2008 R2 Express, then you can download the separate SQL Server Management Studio from the link given by Arunraj.C.

If you have full version of SQL Server, then you could add SQL Serve Management Studio-Basic or SQL Serve Management Studio-Complete via running the installation media.

You may want to refer the below link about difference between SSMS-Basic and SSMS-Complete, so that you could make decision which one is you need to install.

  • The following notes may help others who cannot find Management Studio for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express:

    - The downloads from M$ Tech Net article at are of a reasonably small size and are good for when you already have SQL Server installed and only want to add Management Studio.

    - You don't have to register with M$; it is only 'suggested. Instead, expand the section 'Install Instructions' and click the link to the X32 or X64 installer. The link name for the 64-bit installer is 'SQLManagementStudio_X64 Executable' and the file downloaded is named 'SQLManagementStudio_x64 Executable_ENU.exe' (160MB).

    - If you select 'Run as administrator' the first prompt box says "SQL Server 2011"! This is a bug. The box does not appear if you select 'Open'.

    - You must select the 'New installation or add shared features' option to select 'Management Tools Basic' on the next dialog. (These are tools that are not directly associated with a particular instance of SQL Server, so are not offered if you select 'Add features to an existing instance...')

    - After successful installation, SSMS can be launched from Start menu item: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 > SQL Server Management Studio.
