SQL Server - is it running? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have downloaded and installed Microsoft WebMatrix which includes SQL Server Compact 4.0 .  I also downloaded an open source website called nopCommerce which uses SQL server 4.0 When I try to set up this website via WebMatrix the program says that it cannot find the SQL server - I suspect the server is not running.  How can I tell if SQL Server Compact 4.0 is actually running when I come to use it?

  • SQL Server Compact does not "run" - it is an embedded database engine, that runs in-process with your application. Contact nopCommerce for support on their configuration.

  •  Hi ErikEj - Thanks for your reply. I was basing my question on information from ASP.Net 3.5 for Dummies where in chapter 5 they give a method for testing if SQL Server Express is "running".  They suggest using a command line prompt - sqlcmd- s(local)/SQLExpress and the return prompt 1> means that the server is "running" or perhaps responding is more accurate. How can I know if SQL Server Compact is actually "performing"?

  • Husky,

Can you please let us know the exact error message you get when you try to run the web application? Can you also check in Add/Remove Programs if SQL Server Compact 4.0 is installed in the machine correctly? Like Eric mentoned, SQL Server Compact is different from SQL Server Express edition.

We will be able to help once you provide some more information.

    Thanks

    Imran

  • Hi Imran - thank you for your response.  Checked that SQL Server Compact 4 was installed in Add/remove programs and it appears ok. Also SQL Server Compact 4 Web Tools ENU is installed.  Below is the error message that I get back when trying to set up nopCommerce through WebMatrix:-

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

I appreciate tha t Sql Server Compact is not SQL Server Express but hoped that there would be a similar command line prompt that would let me see if Sql Server Compact was functioning.

    thanks
