SQL node remove failed on Cluster :The state of your SQL Server installation was not changed after the setup execution

    Question

  • HI guys ,

Have you faced this .I am not able to remove the SQL Server 2008 ENT node .The error is :

    Overall summary:
Final result:                  Failed: see details below

The details.txt shows the same error in a different way :

The strang thing is that when I am at the last stage of uninstall it shows me the summary of components to be removed ....there I see SQL ENT EVAL edition .........which is strange ....I have crossed check that its ENT edition in (summary.txt , errorlogs).

The summary.txt is also showing that the setup is EVAL and the database engine is ENT

    Package properties:
Description:                   SQL Server Database Services 2008
      SQLProductFamilyCode:          {628F8F38-600E-493D-9946-F4178F20A8A9}
      ProductName:                   SQL2008
      Type:                          RTM
      Version:                       10
      SPLevel:                       0
      Installation location:         C:\IBM_CHE\SQL server 2008\51036771\x86-x64-IA64\EnterpriseEdition\x64\setup\
      Installation edition:          EVAL

So the setup is from ENT >> Instance installed is ENT but the summary when we unistall I get Enterprixze Evaluation edition ...

I think this is the root casue of this issue ...........any workarounds ..........registry changes ???

  • I guess EVAL can be ignored.

Please send setup log files to me. (you already know my email ID)

  • This is a sign that your SQL install could be corrupt/broken. Run repair (from add remove programme) to understand and fix the underlying issue.

Missing msi/msp files can also cause somethign like this.

    thx- Vijay

  • Vijay,

Thanks for your reply ...We repaired the setup sussessfully from ARP (appwiz.cpl).We opened the case with MS PSS as we could not find much hints in the setup logs .It came out to be missing MSI files issue. But unfortunately the setup did not talk about any MSI file missing unlike in 2005 setup where it use to give the error with some ramdomly generated file number .All we use to do is to get the old files from the setups of RTM or SPs and replace it on the OS ..But here I could not see any clue ...also the MS support team says that the setup also failed to determine CPU type and this clue helped them to find the root cause of missing MSI files ... Yes there are messages related to it but I could nt understand much from it

Package was found but determined as NotInstalled because at least one of CPU, version or language was not matched. Check the match result for which one was not matched.

2010-09-12 09:41:30 Slp: Package ID sql_is_Cpu64: match result for Discovery - Version: True, Cpu: False, Language: True <-- So only CPU is false

The final error is also not very descriptive :)

I wil post here the case summary once its with us ..

    Regards

  • Is it possible that the installer cache got was mistakenly cleaned up and was re-cached incorrectly?

    thx-vijay

  • Not sure Vijay ....But can you cross check if the MSI/MSP files missing error would lead to such situation ...or in case these files are missing , we will not get the same missing MSP/MSI files error ....Sorry I could not work on it yesterday ...I will be reproing it today to see what happens...

  • If the files are missing - the repair catches that. I am not sure what happens if we have files from incorrect architecture.

  • Actually , we used the same setup in many clustured setups ....on Node 5 once we used the same setup to rebuild the master and it worked fine ....here might be a possibility but MS guys used the same setup I think to replace the missing files ...I am not sure if its true .I sent you the case number and you might be able to see if the replaced files are from the same setup or MS Support gave new files from their setup.

  • I installed 2008 EVAL RTM ....success
Changed a few MSI files in c:\windows\installer folder

Ran SP1 and got the error :

    TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
    ------------------------------

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

    C:\WINDOWS\Installer\18b399d1.msi.

    ------------------------------
    BUTTONS:

    OK
    ------------------------------

Summary.txt gave this valid error :
    Exception type: System.IO.FileNotFoundException
        Message:
            C:\WINDOWS\Installer\18b399d1.msi

So looks like its not the MSI issue and we never got such issues.....Could you check Vijay in the case history. I have sent you the case ID ....
