Cannot start SQL Server Browser

    Question

  • Please forgive me if this is a simple problem I'm merely over looking, I'm new to SQL, as in, I installed SQL Server 2008 Express lastnight, and the server is running but I am unable to get Server Broswer, or Server Agent to start, when either is tried I get the following error:

    WMI Provider error.
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. [0x80070422]

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind Regards,
    Daniel

  • Open up your Sql Server Configuration Manager Tool.  You can usually find that under Start (now Windows Icon) -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server (2008 R2) -> Configuration Tools

Look for SQL Server Browser in the list under "SQL Server Services"

Right click it and open the Properties window.  Go to the Service tab.  Ensure Start Mode is set to Manual or Automatic.  Click Apply if you changed it.

Go back to the Log On tab and start your service.

  • If you have installed Express you must not have SQL Server Agent.  For the other part, check if this helps
