SQL Server 2019 Fails to Install RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am trying to install SQL Server 2019 on my laptop.  We have multiple versions of SQL Server on the laptops due to clients having different versions of SQL Server that we are working with.  I am trying to just install the Database Engine Services and it fails to install.  The log is very vague as to what failed, and how we can go about fixing it so that SQL Server 2019 will install along side other versions of SQL Server.

Here is the output of the log:

  • Here is the output of the log:

OS version: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (10.0.18362)
      ...
      Installation edition: Enterprise

You try to install SQL Server Enterprise Edition on Windows 10 Client OS, this may can work, but it's not supported, see Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server => OS Compatibility

  • Read the whole page you linked. Surprisingly, the table that shows which edition is supported on which OS does not show Windows 10 supported AT ALL regardless of edition.

  • We were able to get SQL Server 2019 Enterprise to install on Windows 10, only if there were no other versions of SQL Server installed on the computer.  Though we could then add all previous versions of SQL Server after installing SQL Server 2019 on Windows 10.  We tried this also on Windows Server 2016, and it failed with SQL Server 2016 installed on the server.  A new install of Windows Server 2016, we were able to install SQL Server 2019, then previous versions of SQL Server without it failing.  This is not a OS issue, this a installer was never tested with installing SQL Server 2019 along side previous versions of SQL Server.

  • The requirements are clear - the fact that you got it to install in Win 10 previously is not relevant. It is not supported - the Enterprise version has generally NEVER been supported on a non-server OS.

If you want to install the RTM version just days after release then you should expect to find all sorts of glitches. If you can afford the Enterprise version then you likely have a support agreement - use it.

  • I got a dependency failure trying to install SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition on a Windows 10 machine that has 2016 and 2017 installed. The logs don't indicate what the dependency that failed was.;

  • Hi Amelia, I'm had the same issue. For me I was attempting to install side-by-side with the existing SQL 2017 instance on my laptop (Windows 10 1903 build 18362.449). There's nothing complicated about either instance in that the only components I have are the Engine, Client Connectivity Tools and Client SDK. All three are reporting a dependency failure however other than the standard firewall warning, all rules passed. This laptop also has VS 2019 (v16.3.8) with SDDT and I updated SSMS to 18.4 earlier today. I waited for the RTM version to install so unlike the article you referenced, this laptop has never had any pre-RTM versions of SQL 2019 installed. The blog post you referenced did however end up being the needed fix. Specifically, I had to uninstall ODBC, OLEDB, and SQLCLI, reboot, manually re-install all three, then reboot again before SQL 2019 was able to complete successfully. IMO, there’s something wrong with the SQL 2019 RTM installer which needs to be fixed. Thanks!

Hello Brian. I am the author of that article / blog post. Glad it helped you install SQL Server 2019 😺. I originally wrote it when CTP 2.5 was released and included that version in the title with the hope that it helped SEO and made it easier for people to find it. However, seeing that the issue still exists in the RTM release, I have updated the title of that post (and one or two places within the post) to make it clearer that the info still applies, even to the RTM release.

    Take care,
    Solomon...

P.S. I believe this issue is the same as this other one, also posted on 2019-11-05:

SQL Server Developer upgrade from 2017 to 2019 failure.

  • Yu probably have to dig deeper. I got the same, but after un-installing prior versions. Removing ODBC and OLEDB helped me. But, the details are in the detailed logs. I was helped from a quick Googling, found the article that Solon wrote.

  • By looking at symptoms, it looks like an issue due to older version of SSMS installed. For more details you can refer this blog https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/SQL-Server-Support/SQL-Server-2019-Installation-Error-An-error-occurred-for-a/ba-p/998033

Check the logs and compare with the keywords in above blog.
