Running SSIS Packages via SSMS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had a discussion with a developer about where a package executes when you right click on an SSIS package in SSMS and click Run Package.  I explained that technically it does not run on the SSIS server eventhough you click on the package via SSMS and Run the package.  The DTEXECUI utility (which appears when you click "Run Package") runs locally on your workstation and with that the package runs on the workstation.

Am I incorrect in this statement?  The developer indicated that it runs on the server.  I didn't think that was the case.

  • Your developer is wrong.  You are correct.

When you right-click execute in SSMS, the package is run locally on your machine.  You can ask your developer to verify this is the case by watching the processes that get created - you should see DTExec spawn up on your local machine.
