Make listener mandatory (alwayson) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there a way to make sure a user uses the listener or to prevent direct access to the alwayson partners?

At the very least, is there a way to identify how a connection was established (via the listener or directly)?

  • The short answer is: No

The longer answer is to ask if your networking team can enforce such items as we can't do it at the SQL Server level.

  • A quick follow up on this very old question.

The column local_net_address of the system view sys.dm_exec_connection contains the ip through which the connection was established.  The listener has a defined ip.  Therefore it is possible to determine wether the connection was established via the listener or using the instance name directly.
