win 2016 server std cluster sql server 2017 Attaching 2012 database issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • win 2016 server std cluster sql server 2017 production
    active-active sql cluster

    all recent patches applied.
    SSMS 2017 latest version.

Attaching 2012 database to SQL server instance 2017 took long time and error log showed inconsistency errors.
After the process was killed users were unable to connect to the SQL server instance.

What happened to SQl Server instance? why users were unable to connect to the instance?

    Regards,
    Sergei

  • Further clarification:

Attaching large sq 2012 database of 2.4 TBs.
    SQL Server RAM 980 GBs.
The issue with users happened immediately after the process of attaching a large database was started.
Even after the process was killed the users were unable to connect.

The issue was resolved after restarting SQL server instance.

  • Data file (.mdf) produced by CommVault from backup library wasn't in a good shape.

Data file was regenerated again and attached successfully in 2 steps - attached to sql 2012 first to validate database integrity, then detached and attached to SQL 2017. There were no issues on SQL 2017.

  • Hi Sergei,

    >>Attaching 2012 database to SQL server instance 2017 took long time and error log showed inconsistency errors.

Because the database you attach is very large, it takes a long time. The only thing you can do is wait.
