Data Model refresh on SharePoint Online with Power Query RRS feed

  • Question

  • Should I expect in-browser refresh with SharePoint Online to work for a data model with power query? Ultimate aim is to refresh report from Project Online but even the simplest workbook with a Power Query sourcing data from a table within the same workbook fails.

    The error:

An error occurred while working on the Data Model in the workbook. Please try again. We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in this workbook.

    and

Error: OnPremise error: Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again.
An error occurred while processing table 'Table1'.
The current operation was cancelled because another operation in the transaction failed.

Is it still simply not possible to use Power Query with Excel Online?

    Thanks

  • Hi R Noone,

SharePoint doesn't support refreshing Power Query data sources at the present time.

If you're interested in third party offerings, there's a solution called 'Power Update' which was designed by the guys from PowerPivotPro which you may wish to look into.

  • I just re-read your post. Although it's true that SharePoint and SharePoint Online don't currently support Power Query refreshes, the error message you get is related to not being able to refresh from the Data Model which is something SharePoint Online isn't able to do (on-premise SharePoint can).

Depending on what you're trying to achieve, you may want to consider Power BI, or more specifically, the Power BI Service for delivering interactive reports in the browser: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/features/

  • Running into the same issue.  Our agency just discovered power query and the users are loving it.  Yet now that we've been developing these dashboards, none of them are able to be refreshed through excel web services in our SharePoint Intranet.  PowerBI is not available for .gov users apparently. So, I'm definitely in an unfortunate place right now.  It never crossed my mind that power query would leave me power-less.

If I'm not understanding something, would love to be told that PQ can now be refreshed with Excel Web Services.  Maybe the 2019 versions will have something more functional.
