SQL Server Management Studio Express Data Import RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have installed SQL Server Management Studio Express and trying to import my access tables to SQL database.  In the blogs I have read I can do it from Tasks>>>>Import Data BUt my Tasks menu does not contain any Import Data.   It only contains

Detach, Shrink, Backup, Restore, Generate Scripts.

What is the problem with my Server Management Studio Express

  • Hello,

as you can see in the Edition Feature Compare => Integration Services: No "SQL Server Import and Export Wizard" in the Express Edtion available.

You have to use OpenRowset function to import data manually

  • I believe you are using SQL Express 2005 management studio and it did not had import export task

see workaround for importing data from MS access into SQL Express 2005at

It appear to me that SQL 2008 express MS decided to put such an import feature back into express edition

I tested with SQL Express 2008 Management Studio and I have import/export data under tasks

  • And to adjust my statement, the "Import/Export Wizard" is "partial/limited" in Express Edition, but actually don't know what this limit's are.

  • Hi,

Chriag is correct that SQL Server Import and Export Wizard is not available for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as you can see in the Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Serveer 2005 (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143761(SQL.90).aspx). However, it it availabe for SQL Server 2008 Express Edition as you can see in the Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Serveer 2008 (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993(v=SQL.100).aspx).

Besides what Olaf said using OpenRowset, you can also use SSMA for Access to import Microsoft Office Access database to SQL Server Express. You can download SSMA for Access from Microsoft Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=5abe098d-c7e1-46c6-994a-09a2856eef0b&displaylang=en.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Chunsong
