SQL Server SP1 Upgrade Failing RRS feed

Answers

  • Hi,

So instead of applying cumulative patch we waited for the SP2. SP2 upgrade went smooth on both Staging and Prod servers without any issue.

I checked the error log you shared, and found the above error message. First, please check to see sql_common_core_Cpu64_1.log under the specified path, or you can share that log with us for our further analysis. Second verify the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and you have made the correct upgrade. Besides, which cumulative update are you applying for SQL Server 2016 SP1? Is it the latest CU7?

Also, could you please share the complete error log including the Summary.txt and Detail.txt with us so we can have better understanding? You may upload it to onedrive and share the link here. Do mask sensitive data before uploading.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

    >> SequencePatches starts. Product code: {57846DA8-8B5D-4466-B850-E8CDFC94046C}, Product version: 13.0.1601.5, Upgrade code: {F2F6463E-EE2A-4C0B-B399-F550C887354A}, Product language 1033

I doublechecked the error log you shared, and find that your SQL Server version is SQL Server 2016 RTM, yet the cumulative update 7 is for SQL Server SP1. In this case, I would suggest you first install SQL Server 2016 SP1, then install CU7 for SQL Server 2016 SP1, see if this issue goes away.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

    Regards,

The error above happens could be due to Windows installer failure, and to troubleshoot this issue, please refer to Troubleshooting a Windows Installer Issue

Besides, copy the installation media to C drive, and have another try, see if it helps.

According to Event ID 1001: Windows Error Reporting, the above fault bucket type 5 means phony error. What is logged in SQL Server setup error log when you apply CU7 to SQL Server 2016 SP1 after you move the media to C drive? You can share the detailed error log with us if possible so we can have better understanding.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

  • Is this a Azure Virtual Machine?

You may want to uninstall the patch from control panel and also uninstall SP1.

Then reinstall SP1 and apply patch again.

  • Hi,

this solution worked for me - uninstalling SP1 and reinstalling before running CU1. I had the same error on

    Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (RTM)  - 13.0.1601.5 (X64)   Apr 29 2016 23:23:58   Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation  Developer Edition (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro 6.3 <X64> (Build 15063: ) .

After reinstalling SP1, applying all the CU works smoothly.

    Best regards,

    Gabriela

  • Hi,

So instead of applying cumulative patch we waited for the SP2. SP2 upgrade went smooth on both Staging and Prod servers without any issue.
