  • Question

  • I've tried the web installer and the iso version of 2015 Enterprise and I cant install visual studio. I get an error installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x64 Minimum Runtime

The Windows Error log shows the following messages

Product: Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x64 Minimum Runtime - 14.0.23918 -- Error 1714.The older version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x64 Minimum Runtime - 14.0.23918 cannot be removed.  Contact your technical support group.  System Error 1612.

Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x64 Minimum Runtime - 14.0.23918. Product Version: 14.0.23918. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Installation success or error status: 1603.

How do I go about uninstalling the old version of the minimum runtime? I got in this mess after trying to upgrade from update 1 to update 2. It started throwing loads of errors after install. It didnt show up in the uninstall programs dialog so I did a force uninstall with this https://github.com/Microsoft/VisualStudioUninstaller/releases

That APPEARED to work but now I cant reinstall :(

  • Dear DaveConley,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

According to your description, some older version cannot removed by the VS installer, I recommend you perform a complete uninstall of the previous VS 2015 as the following steps, after that, re-install VS enterprise 2015 again.

You can forcibly uninstall using original installer like run the command: vs_enterprise.exe /uninstall /force in the elevated command prompt.

If you find there has some shared components that not uninstall by the above command, you can have a look at this https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/heaths/2015/07/14/how-to-install-visual-studio-to-another-directory-when-a-pre-release-is-installed/ , use the following solution to find the remaining components that related with the VS 2015 and you can manually uninstall it.

Warning: This will remove all components regardless of whether other products require them. This may cause other products to function incorrectly or not function at all.

    1. Download and install http://psmsi.codeplex.com
    2. Open an elevated PowerShell command prompt and run the following to discover which products have installed the key shared component:

    get-msicomponentinfo '{777CBCAC-12AB-4A57-A753-4A7D23B484D3}' | get-msiproductinfo

       3.  If you’re fine with uninstalling all the listed products (especially given that you’re probably going to install RTM next), run the following:
    get-msicomponentinfo '{777CBCAC-12AB-4A57-A753-4A7D23B484D3}' | get-msiproductinfo | uninstall-msiproduct -properties IGNOREDEPENDENCIES=ALL

If there have any installation issues, I need your help to the VS installation log. Please use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip under %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

    Best regards,
