Sql Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition as Prerequestie in Setup Project......... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We are working in a project which is basically a product about to be launched. Our client wants Sql Server 2008 Standard Edition to be delievered and include in the projects. Now we want to include the Sql Server 2008 standard Edition as one of the prerequestie in Setup Project. Now our concerns is how to manage different users with different license key for the Sql Server 2008 Standard Edition. Or do we need to place new setup in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bootstrapper\Packages which allows files to be shown in prerequestie option.

Kindly provide me feedback if any one knows.

    Thanks,

    Paras Sanghani

  • Standard edition is licensed per processor on the computer where it is installed. I don't thing you can manage license that way.

Your best bet would be to include and use SQL Server Express edition. Starting with SQL 2008 R2 - it now supports database size upto 10 GB.

  • I think tha you might find that there may be licensing restrictions on distributing SQL Server STD, I would suggest that you get you layers and such to look over it before you do.

But SQL Express is the better option and let the end user manage there own server licensing options.

  • Going back to your posts above, you can choose the file based on environment if its 32 bit installation then x86 folder or 64 bit means x64 and so on.

As you say R2 EE bootstrapper is creating problems, what kind of issues - errors/warnings?

  • Hello Chirag,

I think Sql Server 2008 R2 Express Editon gives database size upto 4 GB only which is concern for our client as he dont then needs the end user to go and upgrade with the license in the future and data is very important.

That is one of the (many) limitations of the FREE edition of SQL Server.

Incorrect. R2 express has database size limitation of 10 GB. However, it still have 1 GB of RAM and single processor limitation.

  • Hello Satya SKJ,

Thank you very much again for your valuable feedback.

We are using the Setup Project to deploy our application to the end users. Now, Setup Projects allow us to include the Prerequisties which are required to run our software. For exa: .Net Framework 3.5, Windows Installer, etc. So, as we want to use and distribute licensed Sql Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition. We need to set the same as one of our Prerequestie. So, when users installs setup project all the prerequisties are installed first ie: .Net Framework 3.5, Windows Installer , Sql Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition also.

But mine problem is that i am not able to find the bootstrapper package for Sql Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition. But the link which you give me was regarding bootstrapper package for Sql Server 2008 R2 Express edition and not for Sql Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edtion.

I need to have bootstrapper package at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bootstrapper\Packages in order to include it as a prerequestie. But i am helpless as no bootstapper package is avaiable ............

    Thanks,

    Paras Sanghani
