Upgrade SSRS 2012 to SSRS 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • My organisation is using SQL Server 2012 with SQL Server Reporting Services 2012 Recently we started using Power BI, and would like to integrate Power BI with SSRS.

We would like to know if it is possible to upgrade SQL Server Reporting Services to 2016 edition without upgrading to SQL Server 2016?

  • Hello Olaf,

Yes, it is possible to host the Reporting Server database on a SQL Server engine with a different version then SSRS, as long as the SQL Server is of a supported Version; I guess e.g. SQL Server would be supported in this scenario.

  • @Olaf, are you certain that SSRS 2016 can be run on SQL 2012 (database engine) and be fully functional for all SSRS 2016 features?

  • Ulysses, yes, I am pretty sure, because that are simple databases with less requirements on database engine features and it is also documented, see Create a Report Server Database (SSRS Configuration Manager) (for 2016) => "Database Server Version Requirements": SQL Server 2008 - 2016 are supported to host ReportServer databases.
