Move a subsite from one site collection to other

    Question

  • Hello

we had sharepoint intranet in 2010 and we have built everything in one root collection. We are trying to divide the content and create few site collections (Sales, Service etc) and move the content to those site collections. Export-import method is not working as it is not moving the workflows. What is the best way to move the content and its associated workflows, alerts etc.

    Thanks

  • ou'll be able to use Site Settings >> Content and Structure to move your sub site within the same site collection. In order to move it across the site collection you might need to take help from the 3rd party solutions like Sharegate, Metalogix which will copy your site to the target site collection.

he best way of migration is to use any Migration Tool. I would recommend, Saketa Migrator. All you have to do is register for a trial version which would be of 7 days(which I guess is quite enough if you know how to manage :P) and download the app. Just paste you source and destination and click the play button. Its quite easy.

You also can migrate manually by saving the site as template and providing the downloaded template in the destination site collection.

  • Hi rani,

There is no OOTB method to move a subsite to other site collection with Workflow. In your situation, there are some workarounds:

    1. Manually move workflows to another site collection.

If they are reusable workflows, you can save the workflow as a .wsp file using SharePoint Designer 2010, then deploy the solution into the new site collection.

If the workflows are list workflows, you can use "Export to Visio" and "Import to Visio" to move the workflows.

    Reference:

Move Copy a Designer Reusable Workflow to a new site farm

Exporting and Importing SharePoint Designer 2010 List Workflow

    2. Use Third-party tool as Lakshmanan said.

  • Ok, thank you for the replies.

Grace WR, if we move a subsite within the site collection, will workflows etc move?

  • Hi rani,

No, the workflows will not be moved when the subsite moves to other locations.
