  • Question

  • I'm installing Visual Studio 2009 Service Pack 1 and I'm receiving WebDesignerCore_KB950278 Install failed Error Code 1603. I'm assuming I need to delete some registry keys but can not figure out which one(s).

  • Hi BillNicholas,

Welcome to MSDN forums. And thank you for your post.

    Some clarification with you:
    What's your OS?

For error code "0x643" (decimal "1603"), it's a common error message which means "fatal error during installation". We need more information for further troubleshooting.

Based on your description, the installation fails at installing KB950278 related to Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component, so can you please check if you've any beta/CTP stuff of Office 2007 components on your machine.
    If yes, please remove them.

You also can try the workaround from the following similar issue:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vssetup/thread/eaa3d6b3-95b1-4faf-9f5b-f66455ffda6d

If it doesn't work, please try to use collect tool to collect the log files from your "%temp%" folder:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx

You can upload your log files to SkyDrive and post the link back here.

    Steps:
    - Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start menu >> Run... >> Type "%temp%")
    - Install Visual Studio 2008 SP1
    - Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder
    - Upload vslogs.cab file

Hope this helps. If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,
    Yichun Chen
