Silverlight 2 Beta 2 installs Beta 1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am trying to experiment with Silverlight 2 Beta 2. I try to install it, by going to this site _http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=50A9EC01-267B-4521-B7D7-C0DBA8866434&displaylang=en.

Once I install, I check my control panel and I only see three new entries
     - Microsoft Silverlight 2.0.30226.2
     - Microsoft Silverlight 2.0 SDK Beta 1
     - Microsoft Silverlight Tools Beta 1 for Visual Studio 2008

I was curious as to why Beta 1 was installed, but proceeded with a simple app development instead. I created a small sample with a web app to host. When the designer loads, I get Beta 1 evaluation period has ended and do not see anything in the designer. I continue with just the XAML and then start my web app to see the changes. The page gets the same Beta 1 evaluation period ended message and I cannot view anything.

I think I am missing something obvious here, but cannot figure it out for the life of me! I am installing in XP and VS 2008 RTM. Any help is much appreciated!

  • Thank you for the quick reply.

I uninstalled the SDK that came with the VS tools (silverlight_chainer.exe) and installed the version from the site you pointed out. It also installs only Beta 1. Tongue Tied Still get the same error!

  • Uninstalled using the cleanup utility. Still no avail.

(FYI. I am using VMWare virtual machines. So I have tried the installation using a prior snapshot as well. The first thing I am installing is directly Beta 2. I have not installed Beta 1 before. So I do not understand why this issue happens. Need to at least install and try a few samples soon because client is asking for some information. Any help is much appreciated! )

  •  Hi you dont think about silverlight beta1 compare than silverlight beta2.0 .. when you install siverlight 2.0 beta2  you need not install silverlight beta 1 and dont worry about silverlight beta 1.

in my system i did first uninstall sivlerlight beta 2 chainer  and then reinstall same  silverlight beta 2.0 its working fine ya .. if it is possible you ask to microsoft customer care .. at the same time i will also find out the solution cheers

  • Ok finally some progress.

I read this post http://silverlight.net/forums/t/24670.aspx and realized that the version in the microsoft site (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=50A9EC01-267B-4521-B7D7-C0DBA8866434&displaylang=en) is wrong.

Please see the above mentioned post for the correct location. I can already see that this is beta 2 version because it says "beta 2" in the products affected list. Plus the sizes if the two chainer files are also different.

But I also get the 'Missing Patch" error and cannot proceed with the installation. Will keep monitoring both threads to see if any resolution is reached.

  • Hurray! Finally figured it out.

Like I said in my previous post the location mentioned by 'mohammedsaif' in this forum http://silverlight.net/forums/t/24670.aspx is the CORRECT version of silverlight 2 beta 2. The missing patch error I was getting was only because of an open firefox browser.

The installation has completed successfully and now I have beta 2 finally! I cannot believe microsoft has the WRONG version in its official website http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=50A9EC01-267B-4521-B7D7-C0DBA8866434&displaylang=en

Please do not download beta 2 from there. It will probably save you 2 days of headache and heartburn!

(P.S. Am I allowed to mark as answer to my own question? Well I am gonna anyways. ;))
