Management Studio frame construction issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • n exception was encountered while constructing the content of this frame. This information is also logged in "C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AppEnv\14.0\ActivityLog1.xml".

    Exception details:
    System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.IVsShell5.LoadPackageWithContext(Guid& packageGuid, Int32 reason, Guid& context)
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Platform.WindowManagement.WindowFrame.GetPackage()
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Platform.WindowManagement.WindowFrame.ConstructContent()

    I have two systems that I have tried to get Management Studio 2014, 2016 and 17 working. I keep getting the frame construction error.

    I originally had this issue on my old workstation, so I waited till now when I got a new workstation to try and install it again and I get the same error.

    I have tried to uninstall and reinstall SSMS in all the versions listed.

    I have uninstalled Visual Studio 2012 and BIDS 2012 and then reinstalled and I still get the same error.

    The xml error log says

    <record>100</record>2017/05/11 16:49:18.753<type>Error</type>VisualStudio
Construction of frame content failed.
Frame identifier: ST:0:0:{53544c4d-5c18-11d3-ab71-0050040ae094}
Frame caption:
Exception details:
System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.IVsShell5.LoadPackageWithContext(Guid& packageGuid, Int32 reason, Guid& context)
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Platform.WindowManagement.WindowFrame.GetPackage()
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Platform.WindowManagement.WindowFrame.ConstructContent()

</activity>

    I notice on Connect that the issue is active but unresolved there too..

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Sql Dude,

    Please correct me if I am wrong:
    As far as I know, SSMS 2016/2017 is built on VS 2015 shell and SSMS 2014 is built on VS 2010 shell. The issue might be caused by the VS shell. Please try to reinstall VS shell 2010 from here or 2015 from here. Please let me know if it helps.

    Hope it can be helpful

    Regards,

    Davy

  • Davy,

    I tried to do a repair for the Visual Studio 2010 shell. It fails with an error while asking for the disk saying that it needed the disk for more update that were not available.

    The second link did not work. It went to Microsoft Connect. I will search and see if I can find it.

    Thanks, Chris

  • I did go into Apps and found VS 2015 shell, I kicked off a repair.

    It was strange, it crashed and told me that there was already another version of the product installed and then closed down.

    Thanks, Chris

  • Any news on that? I installed SSMS 17.8.1 and got that error too:

    106 ERROR Construction of frame content failed. Frame identifier: ST:0:0:{53544c4d-5c18-11d3-ab71-0050040ae094} Frame caption: Exception details: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component. at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.IVsShell5.LoadPackageWithContext(Guid& packageGuid, Int32 reason, Guid& context) at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Platform.WindowManagement.WindowFrame.GetPackage() at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Platform.WindowManagement.WindowFrame.ConstructContent() VisualStudio 2018/08/07 09:44:44.125

    On my system is Visual Studio 2017 Pro and SQL Server 2014 Express installed too.

  • Seems this error still exists. Upgraded my SSMS 17 to the latest build 14.0.17289.0. I was one back and everything work fine. No the team explorer window just displays the error "an exception was encountered while constructing the content of this frame."

    the first error in the log file is:

        Microsoft.VisualStudio.CommonIDE.ExtensibilityHosting.VsShellComponentModelHost

Still unable to load MEF component DLL: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.ProjectSystem.V14Only, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
