Is it OK to Register office COM Add-In before office installed RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Office experts,

    Good day!

We have several office COM add-ins (e.g. word/excel/power-points/outlook). Previously, the COM add-ins are registered (by regsvr32 or regasm or install ways e.g. HEAT...) AFTER office products installed, some registry key partially list here:

    e.g.

    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{guid}\
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{guid}\InProcServer32
    • ...

Now, we are trying to register COM add-ins BEFORE office products installed, we expected after office is installed, then pre-registered COM add-ins would be loaded successfully.

According to our testing, seems, it works! But we want to get your official confirm "is it OK to pre-register office COM add-in?". Or is there any potential issues or risks to do that?

Look forward to getting your reply!

    Thanks

    Yuyue
