Upgrade SQL Server 2016 to 2017 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We currently have SQL Server 2016 Enterprise Core edition with SA installed in a VM owned by my team. We would like to upgrade to it to SQL 2017.

I downloaded the SQL Server 2016 Enterprise Core edition via MSDN. When I launch the setup and go to upgrade option, a product key shows up in the product key page. Is that the existing Product Key coming from the SQL 2016 instance or is that coming from the installer?

  • I believe that is from the installer. I upgraded an instance from SQL 2016 to SQL 2017, and I noticed that there was a product key. Since both original instance and the upgrade was taken from MSDN, I assume that it's pre-pidded (as the term is).
