Excel Spreadsheet Error - Desktop version opened read-only from the server (locked for editing by me)

Question

Hello,
Currently having an issue when opening one of our spreadsheets in desktop, which is stored on SharePoint.
The file has to be opened in desktop in order to make edits, as the file contains unsupported features in the browser. The spreadsheet is also password protected.
I have previously opened this file in desktop and edited it for months without any issue. However, recently when I open the file in desktop and enter the password, I receive a message in the top bar which says 'READ-ONLY: We opened this workbook read-only from the server'. When I click on 'edit workbook' it says 'This file is locked for editing by [my name]', and gives me the options to view a read-only copy, or save and edit a copy of the file.
I definitely don't have the file open anywhere, and this is happening after clearing my cache and trying to edit the file in various browsers and on different devices. I have also gone into the Office Upload Centre and removed the file from cached files as well as changing settings to clear cache when files are closed. I have also updated my office package.
My colleague is also having the same issue, with the file saying it is locked because they are editing the file.
We tried saving a copy of the file and uploading that to SharePoint, however when I open that file in desktop it also says it is locked for editing by me
Would really appreciate any advice and guidance on how to get this sorted.

Hi Mairi,
Does the issue exists in one special excel file or in all files?
