Lookup field in sharepoint custom list. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using wss 3.0 with vsewss 1.3.I have my custom list that I created by splist object. Now I want to use my custom lookup field in that list. Is it possible that we can create our own lookup field because i want to show project title field in that lookup and want to save selected projectID in my custom database.

  • You can create a custom lookup field that reads data from an external database but the selected value would be stored in SharePoint. Probably the easiest way to create a lookup field for external data is to use BDC to hook up your external database, you'll then be able to use the BDC data in your lookup field.

If you don't mind having the data in two places, you could handle the itemAdded/ItemUpdatedItemDeleted events in SharePoint then write/update/delete records in your external database
