In-memory cache in Sharepoint 2013 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

A question related to caching data in SP 2013:

If I create an object in the in-memory cache, is it automatically handled by Distributed Caching( Since Distributed Caching is the mechanism integrated in SP 2013) OR

If I create an object in the in-memory cache, it is handled by the respective WFE's only and the other WFE's would not know about it ?

    Appreciate your help.

  • Are you referring to ASP.NET memory caching?

  • Hi Nauplius,

Actually, I have mixed two things here - ASP.NET Caching and Distributed Caching/App Fabric Caching.

As per my understanding, now that i have read few blogs etc. , If i cache a object as we do traditionally in asp.net, then it will be cached on WFE only. Whereas, if we want to have it cached using Distributed Caching, then we need to use Distributed Caching/App Fabric API.

Spare me if this is confusing :)

I hope you are getting me. Essentially, I wanted to cache some object (say a web service response)

    Thanks...

  • Yep, understood.  Keep in mind that the DC instance within SharePoint should not be used by your code.  You can create another DC instance, however.

  • all cache hosts in the same cache cluster are considered as a whole for SharePoint WFE, that is why its called distributed cache.
