sharepoint 2013 blob cache RRS feed

  • Question

  • sharepoint 2013 blob cache, we have multiple js, css, and few images on our sharepoint portal. Is blob cache really stable and good that will increase performance? The replies I am looking for is whether there are hidden issues/instability in blob cache in sp2013.We also have telerik and its multiple js, css files. Will bob cache work for telerik js?

    <BlobCache location="C:\blobCache" path="\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|css|js)$" maxSize="10" max-age="86400" enabled="true"/>

    We also have data coming from database onto page for different users. Can we enable page output cache? Will page output cache change if user requests different data using same page?

  • Have you tried doing a hard refresh from your client machine? It won't re-download CSS or JS if it's already cached them so any updates may not have been pushed from the server.

  • Blob cache work on extension like JS, css, etc

  • Yes, it will work for any assets within a Publishing site. That is what it was meant for. I have a farm solution that can help you configure that without having to manually configure each WFE or devise your own solution.

  • Recommended time limits to shut down and start up web application is 300 seconds. Default is 90 seconds. For large blob cache you might even go up to 600 seconds.

    http://sharepoint.asia/best-practices-for-blob-cache/#.U5odMrGV36M

    As per above blog we need to change time limits to shut down and start up web application if we use blob cache.

    Where to change this setting in iis?

  • Take a look at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12768. That setting is on the IIS Application Pool in IIS Manager. Because you'd be manually setting it, you'd have to manually set it on each SharePoint server. You may also need to manually re-set it after patching SharePoint, or reprovisioning a Web Application, or making Web Application settings changes.

    In IIS Manager, go to Application Pools. Find your Web Application App Pool, go to Advanced Settings. Find the Startup Time Limit and Shutdown Time Limit and adjust as required.

  • You can run fiddler trace before and after enabling the blob cache to see the performance metrics which will give you a clear idea.

    Also my suggestion would be keep your blob cache in non-OS drive.

  • We enabled blob cache 3 days back and when I open that blobcache folder today on server it only has 2 OOB css files cached. Nothing from our custom css/js sitting on _layouts/ourfolder got cached. Does blob cache only caches sitecollectionimages/stylelibrary css js files?

  • It doesn't care where the files are, it's purely interested in the file type.

  • then its not doing it. We have 7 css and 4 js files and images in _layouts/ourfolder but there are only 2 files after 3 days in blobcache folder after its enabled. We also have telerik and its css and js but nothing in blobcache.
