This version of Visual Studio is unable to open the following projects.

    Question

  • My IT department recently reformatted and reimaged my laptop, reinstalling Visual Studio 2013 Pro in the process. Since the reinstall, I am unable to open any of the SSRS projects that I had previously created. When I attempt to open them, I get the following:

    Unsupported

The version of Visual Studio is unable to open the following projects. The project types may not be installed or this version of Visual Studio may not support them.

For more information on enabling these project types or otherwise migrating your assets, please see the details in the "migration Report" displayed after clicking OK.

The Migration Report states, "The application which this project type is based on was not found. Please try this link for further informationhttp://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=299083&projecttype=F14B399A-7131-4C87-9E4B-1186C45EF12D

Following the link didn't really give me anything to go on, but reading another thread, I tried installing Powershell Tools for Visual Studio, but that install was also not successful, indicating that the extension is not installable on any currently installed products.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi JD,

Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.

Firstly, please new a project to check if you installed the SSRS project template as below:

If not, please install the SQL Server Data Tools - Business Intelligence for Visual Studio 2013 .

If you already installed the templates, the cause is much related to the project compatibility during process of migrating and upgrading projects, since you didn't mention the "previous project " was created in which VS version, you could refer to Visual Studio 2013 Compatibility to see if VS 2013 supports these project type.

  • Hi,

It's recommended to try any or all of the following :

    • Restart Visual Studio
    • Try Running As Administrator (Right-click Visual Studio and choose "Run As Administrator")
    • Check for any updates for Visual Studio (Download and install them if any are available)
    • Try Opening a Different Solution / Project
    • If problems persist, you might try the following options :
    • Attempt to reset Visual Studio to System Defaults (Please click Tools->Import and Export Settings->Reset All Settings)
    • Attempt to Repair your Visual Studio Installation;

    Best regards,

    Joyce
