New Class Offerings
XAML Deep Dive
XAML is the primary language used to build UIs for Windows Store apps, Windows phone apps, and WPF apps. This 1-day deep dive acquaints developers with XAML to better prepare them to write Windows Store apps, Windows phone apps, etc. This course covers: layout and drawing, transforms and animations, pixel-addressable graphics, XAML data binding and controls.
Mastering .NET Performance Tuning
Excellent performance is very hard to achieve in today’s world of a million moving parts in your average .NET application. Add in the fact that the .NET garbage collector is a complete black box and it makes your life even harder. Performance is a feature and this session will get you thinking about performance in the right way. This course answers questions such as:
- How do we architect for .NET performance?
- What can I do while coding to make sure I don’t kill performance?
- How can I truly monitor my .NET code during test and production?
- Which performance tools are the best?
Windows 8: Building Windows Store Apps with Windows Runtime
Based on popular demand, we have scheduled a new offering of this Windows 8 class on May 13th – 14th. This intensive two-day course is designed to get Microsoft developers up to speed on the Windows Runtime (WinRT) library so they can write first-class Windows Store apps that utilize the very best features the platform has to offer and that run on a variety of devices, including desktops and tablets.
Stanford Machine Learning Class on Coursera
The next session of the Stanford University Machine Learning class begins on April 22nd 2013. You can sign up on Coursera for this 10-week long online course. This course provides a broad introduction to machine learning, data mining, and statistical pattern recognition.
Tools Highlights
TFS Live – Win 8 / Surface RT & Windows Phone App
/span> Download for Window 8 /RT (or search in Windows Store for TFS Live)
Download for Windows Phone 8 (or search in Windows Phone Store for TFS Live)
LogTap
LogTap is a solution for continuously indexing large amounts of time series data (like logs) and exposing it with blazing fast/flexible queries and reports. Why do you need blazing fast access to logs? Live Site! LogTap is meant to be complementary to big data solutions for large data stream analysis (like Hadoop or Cosmos) and provide better query performance for adhoc log analysis and TiP scenarios.
Service Dashboard
The goal of the Service Dashboard (http://svcdash/) is to provide consolidated information about service health history, and necessary data for live site incidents investigation. The dashboard aggregates and visualizes data from Azure MDS runners infrastructure, Product Studio, TFS and performance counters. Other pluggable data sources will soon be supported. Check it out on toolbox.
Engineering Practices
Case Study: Promoting TDD in the Online Services Division
As part of an increased emphasis on agility and code quality up front, the Online Services Division (OSD) moved to a combined engineering model and implemented Test Driven Development (TDD). The Engineering Excellence team conducted this case study to take a close look at how the adoption of TDD has impacted engineers on the Bing Platform team.
Lesson Page: Agile Risk Management
This lesson page dives into the details of risk management in the context of agile project management. It looks at risk management from the following aspect: risk planning, using manual session-based exploratory testing to discover unknown product risks, retrospectives, frequent demos and sprint lengths.
Learning from Cloud Service Failures
The Trustworthy Computing Reliability office and Services Engineering Team from Engineering Excellence have partnered to pilot an ongoing series of case study analysis designed to highlight lessons learned from those who have endured significant service outages. Two case studies have now been published on the Windows Azure failure on February 29, 2012 and the Microsoft Account outage on September 25, 2012.
Microsoft Account Outage on Sep 25, 2012 - ABSTRACT
At 3:44 AM PDT on September 25, 2012, GFS MOC received “card down” alerts for a device on the network in Microsoft’s San Francisco Bay Area data center. MSA (Microsoft Account, formerly called Microsoft Wallet, Microsoft Passport, .NET Passport, Microsoft Passport Network, and most recently Windows Live ID) is a single sign-on web service developed and provided by Microsoft. It allows users to log in to Microsoft websites (Hotmail, MSN, Xbox LIVE, etc.) that require an email address and password, as well as Windows Phone and Windows 8, using a single account. As a result of the line card failure, several SQL servers and web servers went offline, and roughly 20% of MSA users were unable to log in with their Microsoft account because their data was stored on those offline servers.
Key takeaways and musts for our engineering practices reported from this incident are now available.
