Cannot open .EML file from sharepoint directly into outlook RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently have an email enabled discussion in sharepoint. When I open an .eml file that's attached to one of the posts, it opens the file within internet explorer. Is there a way to configure sharepoint so that it opens the .eml file with Microsoft Outlook, without having to download the file first?

  • You need to change a setting in Central Admin under Web Application General Settings, its currently set to Strict and you need to change it to permissive. Path to get ther... from Central Administration... click Manage Web Applications... Then select the row (not the link) of the web application you want to change.... On the ribbon click General Settings... Scroll down till you see the section "Browser File Handling" change it from 'Strict' to 'Permissive'.  This should fix your problem.  It also as a side note works for PDF's which try with Strict to download instead of opening.

Here is a link to look over but it says the same thing I'm telling you.

I actually already did that. I revised my question because I had miscommunicated what I meant to ask.

  • Hi,

we created an EventHandler to change the type from "eml" to "msg" but maybe this Hotfix solves your problem:

Handler mapping sounds great! I know how to enter those. How do I tell it to use the client's outlook for .eml and .msg files?

  • No EventHandler necessary.

Just change the MimeType for the .eml file in IIS to 'application/octet-stream'.

Found this here - I found that this works for eml files stored in Document Libraries.

For eml(s) attached to List item; I had to make this change client side:
Delete the reg key 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\message/rfc822'

Just delete the reg key will solve it alone.

  • I have tried this. However in my case the .eml file now opens in the browser always and never in Outlook. Could I be missing some IE settign or somethign else? The library settings is set to open the file in client application.

  • As we know, Outlook doesn't offer a way to open EML files. If you want to open EML files into Outlook then, you can take help of any third-party tool, I would like to suggest try EML converter tool from Shoviv that can export your multiple EML files directly into PST outlook format regardless of any issue.
