This view cannot be displayed because the number of lookup and workflow status columns it contains exceeds the threshold (12) enforced by the administrator RRS feed

  • Question

  • This view cannot be displayed because the number of lookup and workflow status columns it contains exceeds the threshold (12) enforced by the administrator.

    1) Does that mean we cant exceed more than 12 lookups in  a list ?

    2) whats the maximum number of lookup allowed in a list ?

    3) what happen if we exceed the lookup Limit ?

    4) how is it going to impact a performance ?

  • Hi Akash123tharu.

That error message is due to a setting at the web application level that has been configured by the SharePoint administrator on the Central Administration. Changing that threshold can adversely affect performance.
Workflows status columns are lookup columns and so are people columns: any of these will count toward that limit and if you exceed that limit the error message is displayed.

    Bye.

  • i totally agree with you that exceeding that limit will get rid of error message. is it really recommended to go to central admin and exceed the lookup limit every time we get this error ?

It would be better trying to review the lists' and libraries' properties to check whether they can be refactored to avoid that error to occur again: raising that limit will have a negative impact on performance.

  • talking about the performance hit, is it gonna impact against the one list that has more than the recommended look-ups, or for every list on the server ?

    thanks

The threshold is a web application setting, therefore the value for that setting will be applied to all the lists in that web application: the perfomance impact will be on the whole web application, not just on the single list.

  • Hi Akash123tharu,

This is a list view threshold, not a list. In a list, you can have more than 12 lookups, however, you are unable to have more than 12 lookups in a list view. So, when you meet this issue, you can check the view settings, and make sure there is less than 12 lookups.

A blog about List View Lookup Threshold for your reference:

    Thanks,
