  • I am from England, UK.

I am using the retail version of vs2012 pro, that came with a dvd to install it.

My Windows 7 Pro Sp1 64bit PC is not updated with the latest patches, I stopped updating more than a year ago and do not wish to update.

I have removed all entries from my hosts file, saved and rebooted - same problem.

I have reset firefox (my default browser) & reset Internet Explorer, i tried making IE my default browser - same problem.

I have no proxy/vpn settings set up in either IE (version 11.0.9600.18163, update versions: 11.0.27 KB3124275) or firefox (version 70.0 (64 bit)). Nor have i set up proxy/vpn settings anywhere else.

I use a usb netgear wifi dongle to connect to the internet from my fujitsu lifebook laptop model ah512/a512 cant recall which one of these it is. my laptops in built wireless is turned off.

I have Kaspersky Total Security 20.0.14.1085(d), database release date 26/10/2019 21:30.

Kaspersky Total Security comes with Kaspersky secure connection, which is a vpn and i am subscribed to it, it is currently turned off but it loads at startup still.  So I am using my normal Wifi 5Ghz connection to the house router with virgin media ISP, i do not have access to change settings on the router.

I still get the problem with Kaspersky and secure connection being exited / closed.  Help viewer 2.0 and visual studio executables are all trusted in the application list anyway.

I am able to access http://services.mtps.microsoft.com/ServiceAPI/catalogs/visualstudio11/en-us  directly from both my firefox & IE web browsers, in both cases i can see the books in the catalogue.

Originaly i was able to see the books in the help viewer manage tab available to download from Microsoft, i guess this problem happened in the recent weeks.  I have done a lot of things since including install/uninstall of other softwares etc. I know i uninstalled all of my saved to hard drive books from help viewer manage tab, i wonder if you need at least one book installed for the vs2012 help catalogue to display available books, though fresh installs have this problem.

I know there have been times where the help viewer did not uninstall or did not install. Last time i uninstalled vs2012 pro and then used revo uninstaller to make sure the help viewer was uninstalled completely and then reinstalled vs2012 pro, there were no entries in the event viewer stating the install had problems, at least not any red errors or yellow warnings.

I have previously tried changing the settings/config files for help viewer with no luck in solving the problem.  I tried different command line commands for both HlpCtntMgr.exe & HlpViewer.exe.

I have deleted visual studio 2012 pro related folders ater uninstalls that were left over, the same for help viewer 2.0 folders let over after uninstall.

I have never edited the registry to delete or change either vs2012 pro or help viewer registry entries.

when i load help viewer 2.0 from within visual studio 2012 pro i get a red x error at the bottom left of the help viewer screen, in both this window and the manage tab window, lately just in the manage tab window. the error is a shortened version of the event viewer log i pasted into the opening post. Error states unable to connect.

I guess my license key for vs2012 pro has been saved in the registry from the first time install years ago as i have not been asked to enter a key in recent reinstalls, the product still says it is licensed to my name so i guess it still has my license key.

  • below is the detailed error info etc for the problem i am having...

on start of help viewer the search tab is open on the left in the search box it states "MSDNSTART".
on the right it says in the first tab "No content was found on your computer. To download content to your computer, click the Manage tab."
on the second tab "Manage Content" i click it...
    under disk it has "C:\Users\EDITEDOUTMYLOGINNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\HelpViewer2.0\VisualStudio11_en-US\HelpContentSetup.msha"...
It has one book installed under, available documentation\microsoft help viewer 2.0 documentation\Microsoft Help Viewer 2.0 Documentation" it has a blue "add" button where i can install this.

the red error ("Errors occured. Click here for details.") bottom left of help viewer window when clicked on displays this error window...
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The following errors occurred while performing the requested tasks:"

"An error occurred while determining the list of available content: Unable"
"to complete requested task because of network connectivity issues:"
    "Unable to connect to"
    "/en-US. Check your internet connections."
"Check your network connection and try again."
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
the error window has an "OK" button.

even if i install the "Microsoft Help Viewer 2.0 Documentation" which does install succesfully, i reload help viewer and then displays in both the online & disk windows, but i still get the same error displayed bottom left, same problem.
after install of the "Microsoft Help Viewer 2.0 Documentation" the first tab now displays "Help Viewer Home", shows the installed help book etc, the right tab is still "Manage Content".

Its worth noting i have had other different errors in the past including an error about proxy server settings etc, this happened after various install, reinstall, repair, uninstalls - i actually got a few problems.  Though i am not interested in them at the moment.

  • Hi thedillinger,

Sorry for the late reply. According to your uploaded logs, I note that the error message is caused by internet connections. So, you could firstly check you network connection. The computer you install the set of content to must have access to the internet.

You could try to open the link ( https://services.mtps.microsoft.com/ServiceAPI/catalogs/visualstudio11/en-us ) with default browser. In addition, before you create the content set, you must firstly uninstall all local Visual Studio content on the computer.

Besides, if the above suggestions don’t work for you, we think it is an error about missing or corrupted content file. You could check your storage path in the registry. The path is as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Help\v2.0\Catalogs\VisualStudio11.

If the location Path in the registry isn’t the stored path, you could backup the registry table and change the location Path.

by the way, if possible, we hope to receive more screenshots of your help viewer page or logs about the error so that we can better solve the issue.

Hope all above could help you and any feedback would be great expected.

    Best Regards,

    Tianyu

  • I am connected to the internet and can surf the web without problems with my 3 web browsers. At the time of the problem the internet was connected and working.  I use a netgear wifi dongle plugged into usb socket of my laptop to connect to the internet.  I have kaspersky total security installed with a vpn service but the vpn was turned off at the time of the problem. As you can see from the screenshots i am able to acces the below website on all of my 3 web browsers, although chrome does not display the page correctly, but firefox is my default browser...

    https://services.mtps.microsoft.com/ServiceAPI/catalogs/visualstudio11/en-us

I am unable to test whether my internet connection is causing the issue, i have an unlocked 3g cellular internet dongle that i tried with a sim card in it but i was unable to get it to work, i entered the connection settings for the isp as best i could and i know there was only a weak signal.  I have no other ways of testing on another internet connection, sorry.

I just checked and i still have the same problem today.

I have tried previously uninstalling visual studio 2012 professional from add/remove programs, rebooting, then reinstalling, this did not solve the problem.
If you have instructions how to do a manual uninstall of vs2012 pro and help viewer including what files, folders and registry entries to delete i will try it.
I do not understand what you mean by delete all local content unless you meant uninstall vs2012 pro.  If you meant i have to uninstall the help viewer files and books in some way then please give me instructions.
when you said "before you create the content set" - i guess the content set is created automatically during the install process for vs2012 pro, or is there something else i have to do.

well your suggestion did not work and as you say it may be a missing or corrupted content file, how do i proceed to check if this is the case.  I checked the below registry path and you can see the value from the screenshots...
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Help\v2.0\Catalogs\VisualStudio11.
as far as i am aware the location path is the same as the stored path? can you tell from the screenshots?
I did not edit the registry for that reason.

I have provided more screenshots and logs about the issue in previous posts.

I will await further instructions, thanks for your help on this matter,

  • as per the Visual Studio installation Tips thread,

during reinstall of vs2012 pro i made sure to ...

disable my anti virus - kaspersky total security

my pc has not been updated by windows update since about 2016 or so - this is my choice, i stopped updating after the telemetry updates started appearing and i believe they are spyware.

I made an iso image of my installation cd and run the install from a mounted iso image.
mainly because my disk has had some access problems sometimes.

i have attached 3 screenshots to show my add/remove programs - microsoft products.

    I have a windows 7 professional, sp1, 64bit laptop pc.

  • Hi thedillinger,

Thanks for your update and sorry for the delay reply.

According to your uploaded logs and pictures, for us to investigate this further, I could reproduce the issue on my side and I am sorry that Visual Studio 2012 with Microsoft help viewer 2.0 doesn’t work. So, it is recommended to use a newer version of Visual Studio. But if you want to install content from Help Viewer 2.0, I suppose you could refer to the link which could be useful for you.

    >> I stopped updating more than a year ago and do not wish to update.

    ## I notice that your windows system using is Windows 7. It is really an old version. If possible, I suggest you could update it to a newer version which could avoid some errors about Windows System.

    >> If you have instructions how to do a manual uninstall of vs2012 pro and help viewer including what files, folders and registry entries to delete i will try it.

    ## If you want to uninstall VS2012 and help viewer, I suggest you could try to use the troubleshooter tool.

Thanks for your understanding and sorry for any inconvenience.

    Best Regards,

    Anna

  • Hi Anna,

I am a little confused, Anna please can you reply stating that you DID reproduce the issue/problem on your system, or that you DID NOT reproduce the issue/problem on your system?

I will not update to a newer version of windows because windows has turned into spyware, especially so windows 10. So i will be sticking with windows 7 for the foreseeable future.

I do not wish to use any other version of visual studio, including newer versions, i am happy with 2012 Pro.  I will try to get vs2012 working.

Thank you for your sugestions though and your workarounds which before i try them i thought i should reply to your message first.

Is there any way that you could find manual uninstall instructions for help viewer 2.0, if you cannot do so for vs2012 pro as well?  That will remove the local storage folder for help as well as all registry entries, files and folders. I realise you have ofer3d a possible uninstall tool and that i have already asked previously but asking again in case there is any chance of you asking microsoft for manual uninstall instructions.

my apologies that i felt i must ask again .

your link for manual install of the help viewers vs2012 books/cabs may be a sufficient workaround, i hope to try that out in the future when i get time.

    Thanks for your help

  • if i was trying to reproduce the problem i would probably start here...

"I know i uninstalled all of my saved to hard drive books from help viewer manage tab, i wonder if you need at least one book installed for the vs2012 help catalogue to display available books, though fresh installs have this problem."

my suggestion for reproducing the problem...

    1) fresh install vs2012 pro retail from dvd, help viewer 2.0 will be automatically installed with that.

    2) if help viewer 2.0 does not have the problem, try viewing all vs2012 pro related books/cabs, if you can then install some, then commit the installation of them. close help viewer, close vs2012 pro. reboot?

    3) open vs2012v pro, open help viewer, remove all installed vs2012 pro books/cabs, i do not know if i removed the help viewer 2.0 help book there should be one, commit the uninstall of them. close help viewer, close vs2012 pro. reboot.

    4) check if you get the problem. if not uninstall in add/remove programs vs2012 pro and help viewer 2.0 and anything else related to the vs2012 pro install. reboot.

    5) reinstall vs2012 pro from the dvd. reboot.

    6) check if you get the problem.

*i am really caught up in the idea that removing the last installed book/cab for vs2012 pro somehow stopped me from viewing any available content.

    Wednesday, December 11, 2019 11:36 PM
  • all i would really like is help viewer 2.0 manual uninstall instructions.  probably wouldnt need vs2012 pro manual uninstall instructions.

perhaps the problem is caused by the reinstalls not overwriting some files that may or may not have been modified from default install settings. so 2 part installs are installed and conflicting, the reinstall and some files stuck on previous installations settings or contents..

  • I have the same problem and would like to hear about solution.
    Saturday, December 14, 2019 1:58 PM
  • Hello.  I believe I have narrowed the problem down to either a HTTPS certificate issue or a lack of support for TLS 1.2 in those applications.  I have found the problem occurring on Help Viewer versions from Visual Studio 2010 all the way to 2015 (or Help Viewer versions 1.x, 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2).

By installing the SSL interception proxy available at https://wink.messengergeek.com/t/using-proxhttpsproxy-to-avoid-errors-when-using-msn-wlm-messenger-on-windows-xp/10062 I managed to get the Help Viewer to download the content just fine (the proxy works on Windows 10 too).

Since this proxy intercepts all traffic, you may want to consider disabling and uninstalling it once you are done downloading the help files, to ensure your browser can continue to run at its full HTTPS capabilities.

Please note that the catalogs for some reason display documentation sets that are not compatible with older versions of Help Viewer 2.x so you will want to stick to the VS2012 documentation, or download the .iso versions of it at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34794

Perhaps Microsoft could look into making the services.mtps.microsoft.com server compatible with these legacy applications, or since these versions of Visual Studio are not yet EOL, release hotfixes to allow the Help Viewer applications to connect properly to the server.

  • hi BFeely

I dont have time to try this right now but i wanted to say this...

I have Kaspersky Total Security installed on my windows 7 sp1 pc.  I opened a support ticket with kaspersky labs about a problem i was having with firefox and their application.  It seems by default kaspersky installs its own SSL certificate into firefox which replaces the original firefox SSL certificate.  Kaspersky does this in order to scan encrypted web traffic for viruses.

Well i noticed just recently prior to making the kaspersky labs support request that within firefox the padlock icon to the left of the url bar was no longer green when i visited a secure website (https), instead it was grey, this was a new thing, it used to be green in the past.  I know now the padlock is grey on secure sites and grey with a red line through it on unsecure sites.

Kaspersky labs explained to me that this was work as intended because firefox cannot validate the SSL certificate installed by kaspersky and that there is nothing they can or will do about that since it is working as intended.

It seems this kaspersky/firefox problem coincided with my problem here about help viewer.

You mentioned the problem could be caused by "either a HTTPS certificate issue" which is interesting considering my kaspersky problem.

Thank you for your research and troubleshooting.

  • Interesting observation. But I don't have Kaspersky or any other antivirus yet have this problem. Nor do I use firefox.

    Wednesday, January 1, 2020 7:35 AM
  • hi BFeely

    more observations/info

please view the 8 attached screenshots all taken from within the kaspersky total security - network settings screen and sub screens within that.
i believe that some web browsers, like firefox and some anti-virus software like kaspersky total security do not allow old, vulnerable, compromised encryption technology (lesser standards of encryption) to be run on the pc.  idk if the microsoft help viewer relies on any of those? i am not sure of the complete list of banned encryption standards but from my attached screenshots you can see the kaspersky total security does not allow SSL 2.0 Protocol.

from clicking on the button to the right of "the certiicate must be installed manually" from within the kaspersky total security - network settings screen i get to the below webpage...
    General articles: Software compatibility
How to add the Kaspersky Lab root certificate to the Mozilla Firefox or Thunderbird certificate storage
    https://support.kaspersky.co.uk/14620?cid=KTS_20.0&utm_source=interceptor&utm_medium=product&utm_campaign=KTS_20.0
note that i have never done any of the two below actions..
    1) How to add the Kaspersky Lab root certificate to the Mozilla Firefox or Thunderbird certificate storage
    2) How to reconfigure Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird to make them use the system certificate storage

note that i still get the help viewer problem whether my vpn (kaspersky secure connection) is turned on or turned off.

my other problem with help viewer for vs2012 that i ran into is desribed below. note i never used to get this problem before, it occured after either an uninstall and reinstall of vs2012 or a repair of vs2012. note i had the main problem in this thread even before i had the other problem i describe below...

i cannot remember the exact error that i got with help viewer, it was related to a proxy error or proxy settings.
the problem may have been this below problem or something similar, i do remember there was a troubleshooting thread about it likely on msdn...
problem was this or something like this...

i performed the actions under 1 Answer, in the below thread i found on the internet and that proxy error dissapeared in help viewer, but i was still left after with the main problem this thread is about. fyi i was never using a proxy or vpn in order to get the proxy error.

  • hi Яков

I am just trying to give info to BFeely in the hope it helps his understanding of the problem or troubleshooting it, he has listed a sugested answer already which i have not tried.  Just happy for any help i can get here.

I realize you do not have kaspersky or firefox, but perhaps the problem is an ssl certificate problem (https).  though i am only guessing based on what bfeely has shared.

  • hi BFeely

it may be worth researching what web browsers (firefox, ie, edge, chrome etc, latest versions) block which encryption protocols / standards, for whatever reason, because of vulnerabillities etc.  I use ie, chrome, firefox and all have the same main problem of this thread.

also same as above but for kaspersky total security etc.  idk if the operating system can block certain encryption protocols / standards.

i found this news article, it probably is unrelated but posting anyway, it only relates to firefox, its more related to DNS...

Firefox Plans Controversial New Encryption Setting For Millions, And Update Starts This Month

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2019/09/08/firefox-announces-major-new-encryption-default-to-protect-millions-of-users/

note that as far as i can remember i tried to see if i had the same main problem if i uninstalled kaspersky total security, as far as i can remember yes the problem remained.  however the SSL certificate kaspersky installed? into firefox or made firefox use was still present even after uninstall of kaspersky, so that change did not automatically revert back to using firefox's default SSL certificate.  I do remember the padlock in firefox still wasnt green (it was grey) on encrypted https sites so this must be the case, that firefox was still using a kaspersky SSL certificate even after kaspersky was uninstalled.

    .

  • hi Яков

Can you let us know here what operating system, security software and browsers you use that have this problem with help viewer.

    Wednesday, January 1, 2020 7:09 PM
  • hi BFeely,

it may or may not be worth noting that in firefox only i have the addons..

    kaspersky protection extension

    noscript security suite

    adblock plus

    ghostery (more recently installed)

I uninstalled the addon blocksite / block site ? (it was one of them, theres a few with the same name)

probably not relevant since i get the main problem with my other 2 browsers that do not have these addons, when i make them the default browsers.
