Converting .docx file to .doc format RRS feed

  • Question

  •  Hi

I am using openXML sdk 2.0 for creating word report in server side and able to create docx file. But I want to convert that docx file in .doc format ( for lower version support) without using office automation. Is it possible? Is there any way to use office compatibility pack api in web app. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

I think the short answer is no you cannot do that. Obviously you can use office automation or you could use a 3rd party library, the Aspose one comes to mind (http://www.aspose.com), but it is expensive. You could of course convert the file formats yourself but that would take forever...

  • Hi,

you have to wrap the converter dlls coming with compatibility pack in order to convert from docx to doc without automating Office.

These converter dlls convert from their document format to RTF and/or from RTF to their document format using the interface ForeignToRtf/RtfToForeign. You can chain converters as you wish to convert from one format to another.

You can get the SDK from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B111716&x=16&y=7 which includes several samples on how to use existing converters.

You can find out which of the converter dlls are responsible for OpenXML conversion by looking at the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\Word12
