SharePoint 2010 Search Service Index RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We ran full crawl last week which hasn't been done in a while. First of all it took too much time to do a full crawl. Second, it is very large file. It is OK but there is old index file from months ago. How can I delete the old index file?

    Thank You

  • Hi Danny_05,

To delete the old index file, you could reset index in search service application. Go to central administration->manage service applications-> search service application-> Crawling->index reset.

After resetting index, you could run a full crawl. After running a full crawl, it will generate new index files in the search service application.

  • Hi Sara,

I know resetting is an option but is it the only option? It is large production environment, and it takes crawling too long.

    Thank You

  • Hey Sara,

It was supposed to delete the old one when it finished the crawl! It didn't delete because of not having enough space. We added additional space to the drive, and it deleted the old index before the next crawl.

    Thank You
