Using the STS3S protocol for content sources RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm having some trouble setting up search within SharePoint. I had my content sources set to crawl the regular https sites we host. That was kind of slow and took loads of CPU time. In an effort of speeding things up I came accross the sts3s and sps3s protocols which should allow me to index faster using the SharePoint built in webservices for this purpose. The strange thing is that my content source (new ones too for that matter) doesn't allow me to enter sts3s as a protocol. Only the sps3s is allowed for the mysites site; which works fine.

The error it gives me is The start address "sts3s://sharepoint.site.com/" is not valid for this content source type. which isn't really helpfull. I tried creating a new content source of a different type (the current one is SharePoint sites), but I just cannot seem to get it to work. Is there something I'm missing perhaps? It still works with the https addressess by the way.

A quick overview in reply to your question:

    The SPS3 Protocol

The SPS3 protocol is used for crawling people profiles (e.g., those defined in the SSP) to support the "People Search" functionality in the MOSS Enterprise Search. This protocol is used to index WSS 3.0 server farms (which MOSS 2007 is layered on top of )

"People Profiles" are at the SSP level:

    ·         This profile spans multiple Site Collections (all those web applications/site collections within the SSP)

    ·         The "My Site" commonly exposes the ability for people to edit their own information through the "My Profile" tab

    ·         The WSS profile information is the information that you can edit from the

Note: that the WSS profile is not the same as the SSP profile information

    Examples:

            sps3://MySite.YourDomain.com/

            sps3://www.YourDomain.com/

            sps3:/Portal.YourDomain.com/

Note: that if you are using SSL on your My Site host headers, the SPS3 protocol should not be used, and you should change your content source to use the SPS3S protocol instead.

The protocol handlers (that ship out-of-the-box with MOSS 2007) translate the content source URL from sps3:// into a web service call sps3://MySite.YourDomain.com and is crawled on the web front end by the indexer using a SOAP call to the web service http://MySite.YourDomain.com/_vti_bin/SPSCrawl.aspx (the SPS3 SOAP call is made using
HTTP protocol on TCP Port 56737
). The SPS3 protocol is used when you have enabled SSL for the My Sites, and is used for crawling people profiles (e.g., those defined in the SSP) to support the "People Search" functionality in the MOSS Enterprise Search. This protocol is used to index WSS 3.0 server farms using SSL (which MOSS 2007 is layered on top of)

  • The original post was asking about STS3S:// not SPS3S://. Why does the latter work for People Search, but the former does not work at all?
