Is it possible to have a form field collecting multiple pieces of data within a single field the user being able to add rows as needed RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a "MS Word" form that currently uses a multi-line text area to capture data. It might be a single row or 5+. This is in addition to roughly 20 other fields being captured. Users range from typing in responses, copy/pasting, disregarding the form entirely and placing responses in the body of emails.

Sample (Date - Times - Work Type - Location)(Events can be up to 4 days)(there can be up to 8-10 rows of data per day)

    11.01.19 - 9:30am-10:30am - Headshots - Lobby

    11.01.19 - 10:30am-12:00pm - Classroom - Room 242

    11.01.19 - 12:30pm-2:00pm - Candids - Hall 101

We are looking to be able to validate each subset of data. Sometimes it is missing or in the wrong order. Ideally, if we can get it formatted correctly, we can auto-populate a calendar view and create a visual of the schedule.

So far , I have created a Form that does most of what we need but it pretty bulky on the backend. we created columns for each "day' and separated start time /end times in columns so we can generate the calendar event. If we could count on users simply following the syntax it might be fine to just have the single multi-line field. It was suggested that I place a table inside a field and validate each cell. Haven't found anything that suggests that is possible.

Additionally, it would be nice to hear of the good approach to have the form display a single day with a single timeframe and have the user expand days or times as needed. Seems to be much more available to review for this but most point to selling form builder add-ons. Might be worth it but we have one form that is used for a single client. just trying to become more efficient and stop the countless copy/pasting that is currently happening.

    -Thanks

  • Hi sgraef,

Do you mean you want to validate the order of Date and Times from each rows in a multiple line text area in Word file? Whether you want to extract date and time to individual rows from the multiple line text which users can expand based on the date to make the data easy to view?

If that’s the case, I don’t think it’s possible in the InfoPath form using OOTB method. You need to use code to develop as your requirement.

Or you can extract data to excel file and filter data. Reference: Repeating Section. How to Extract and Split to Excel.
