parent and child - update childs items when parent item is changed only by WF

  • I have a parent list and a list of child.

Relationship between parent items and sons items is the parent ID:

parent ID is planted in son item ( field name : ParentID)

    The application needs:

when parent is changed go to child list and in each item that "parentID" is equl to the ID of the parent, make changes.

can i do the action using SPD 2013 only ?

  • Hi,

going with sharepoint designer wont be a good option for this requirement because for changed items you wont be able to get the before value of that items in workflow, so you cant query and update the child list based on that value.

    please check

if you want to go for with sharepoint designer then you must have one more column to store the previous values of your parent ID. then you can match the updated value and previous value and update the child list with new value.

going for a event receiver (item Updating) would be the great option for this requirement.

  • Hi Nikita,

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to change the corresponding childes when the parent changes.

Based on your description, I created two lists called Parent and Child, and added a column in Child list called ParentID.

I created a 2013 workflow in SharePoint Designer to achieve your goal, the workflow is associated with the Parent list and it was set to start when an item is changed:

You can follow the link below to configure the Build Dictionary, Call HTTP web service and Get an item from a Dictionary steps:

    Best regards.
