Remove Add-In Bar in Outlook 2016 Desktop RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are working on upgrading an app (Outlook Add-in for Office 365) and make it compatible to Office 2016. We have integrated couple of Command Buttons in the ribbon which solves all the purpose of app even when activate in Add-in bar.

We would like to hide Add-In bar and show only Ribbon Command in Outlook 2016 Desktop. However we do want to show add-In bar for OWA 2016 and Outlook 2013.

We looked in to manifest and could not find a way to hide the Add-In bar activation specifically for Outlook 2016 Desktop client.

    Please advise.

  • Hi Pallav,

Based on these articles below, there isn’t the way to achieve that. You could submit this user voice here, after that, you may post the link here which will benefit others who has the similar issue.

    # Office Add-ins XML manifest

    # Outlook add-in manifests

  • So you cannot determine what elements (Ribbon Comand vs the Gray Add-In Bar) show up based on the client version (Outlook 2013, or OWA 2016)

But if you use VersionOverrides in the manifest, then on client versions that support that VersionOverride it will ignore the legacy/older sections of the manifest and use the VersionOverrides section.

For example, in your manifest, specify your Ribbon Buttons in Version Overrides 1.0. Do NOT specify a CustomPane (CustomPane in version overrides are equivalent to the old gray bar).

On clients that support VersionOverride 1.0, you will get the ribbon buttons. On clients that do not support VersionOverride you should get the legacy (gray bar) behavior.
