External Content Types Not Visible in SPD RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have many External Content Types setup in my farm, all setup through SharePoint Designer (no custom Visual Studio projects) and up until last week everything worked fine. But Now none of the ECTs are visible in SPD, but the lists still work on the site and the ECTs are visible in Central Admin.

I have looked at the permissions on the:

    1. BDC Models

    2. External Systems

    3. External content types.

All of those are correct and the user does have access to those things.

Also, When trying to add a new ECT I get an error that says "An unexpected internal error occurred in the Business Data Connectivity Shared Service: The specified user or domain group was not found." (pictured below) I cannot figure out what user/group it is referring to or where to look for this. Any help is appreciated.

  • Hi,

According to your post, my understanding is that External Content Types are not visible in SharePoint Designer and when trying to add a new ECT I get an error that says ‘The specified user or domain group was not found’.

This symptom was caused by a user account which was removed from Active Directory, that was assigned to a Managed Metadata Service Application.

You need to check each Identity Name in Active Directory to determine which one was removed and then re-create the account in Active Directory.

Here is a similar thread for you to take a look at:

In addition, I suggest to ask the farm administrator or the delegated farm administrator to give you edit permissions on the BDC metadata catalog.

  • So, I searched through my databases and found no deleted users and had pretty much given up hope when I happened to find a deleted user from a trusted domain was still referenced in an AD group that has permissions on BCS, removing the reference to that user from the group membership fixed the problem instantly.
