Outlook Addin For 2010 and 2007? RRS feed

  • Question

  • hi,

I am developing a Outlook addin. I have added some controls in Menubar and tool bar. This works absoultely fine for versions 2003, 2007. I am not able to see the customizations in the Outlook 2010. I am aware of the fact that 2010 doesn't have command bars and only supports ribbon. I have few questions.

    1.  How to go forward for the above problem? Should I develop seperate addins for 2010 and 2007 ?

    2.  If this can be achieved with one addin. What version of the Visual studio should I opt 2008 or 2010?

(As 2008 has no Outlook 2010 addin project)?

    Thank you,

    Suneel

  • if you want to support all outlook versions from 2003 to 2010 then vs2008 is as high as you might go. vs2010 will not allow you to automatically create add-in that will be loaded in office 2003. As for UI customizations - either create separate add-in projects for 2003 and 2007 and higher and in each reference proper interop assemblies or go with single assembly but be very very careful about which properties and objects you use there so you would not reference types from >=2007 in functions that are used in 2003 execution path. It is described in more detail here:

  • Hi Damian,

I will be more specific. I have a functionality where I have added controls in the toolbar and menu bar. As Outlook 2010 no longer supports the toolbar and menubar. Can I write a common functionality in the Outlook addin 2007 where I will check for version and appropriately add control to toolbar or Ribbon.

  • You can do that, and the article from Andrew Whitechapel's blog tells you exactly how to do it. Read the articles Damian pointed out.
