  • Question

  • Hey all,

I'm putting together an installable version of my extension.  I'm using WiX right now, which is working great so far.  I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on any other options, though.  I've read a little bit about ClickOnce, for example, but it looks like it wouldn't be a good choice for IE extension written in C++.

But it did remind me of a feature I'll be needing at some point: an auto updater.  Is there anything suggestions for this or does everyone pretty much write their own?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

The wininet api contains the functions you need to perform auto-updates. I use the Advanced Auto-Update Active X control ($30US) for user initiated updates. You will also find sdk's for Windows Update on MSDN.

I particuarly don't like auto-updates as they can degrade the performance of the browser when starting up and are mistaken by users as poor browser performance. Please make your updates a menu option that your uses can choose at their leisure.

    Regards.
