Browser helper objects and hkcu

  • Hello all

If I register my browser helper object under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects" it works as expected.
But if I try to register it under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects" it doesn't work. The dll is not loaded by Internet Explorer at all.
Is there a workaround for this? I want to allow the bho to be usable by limited users.

  • Limited users should still be able to read that key, just not write to it.  So they could use it, but not install.  Is that not the case?

  • Yes and this works fine as long the limited user only needs to read but I would like to able to allow limited users to install as well. Everything else about the bho can be changed to accomodate limited users, including writing the com registration to HKCU\Software\Classes so this should probably be considered a bug in Internet Explorer unless it was done by design.
