Many connection timeouts, SQL not authenticating.

    Pertanyaan

  • I'm having a problem where a bunch of users will get connection timeouts on SQL 2008 running on Windows Server 2008 R2.

The troubleshooting I've done so far...

I see in the connection ring buffer a whole group of logintimer errors all around the same time (within the same second).

When I did a capture using netmon I saw a couple of things.

For those users that eventually timeout the prelogin tds packet is followed by a normal tcp ack instead of a tds prelogin reply message and then the tcp connection is finalized.  Eventually the tds prelogin reply is sent (like 20 seconds later) which is replied to with a tcp reset.

The strange thing is that when I look at the traffic between the SQL server and the DC in this timeframe (between the TDS prelogin request and the eventual reply) I barely see any requests to the DC for authentication.

I can't tell whether SQL isn't making the authentication requests or whether LSASS is hanging for some reason.

I'm pretty sure I've ruled out resource pressure, cpu usage at the time is around 30% and memory is at about 90% (of 32GB).

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

  • SQL Could be taking more time to authenticate or make a connection in these scenarios:

    1. There is a logon DDL Trigger

    2. Resource governor is configured for this isntance.

However, You can Check the delay if any caused by these two things by profiler

    just add these event classes:

    Session

    Preconnect start

    Pre-connect completed

The difference will tell you the time taken for either or both of these features\techniques.

  • Well, This suggests that you have some serious blocking on the server and that's why SQL Server is very busy and your connections are timing out.

I suggest you to do the following:

    1) Log on to SQL Server using Dadicated Administrator Connection.

    2) Run Activity Monitor or sp_who2 to check if there is any heavy blocking on the server. Check out my article that explains different methods for indentifying blocking on SQL Server: Different techniques to identify blocking in SQL Server.

    3) Once indentified, kill the offending process and then test connectivity as normal

Hopefully this will resolve the issue.

Thanks for the reply but there are no logon triggers and we don't use resource governer.  I have confirmed this with the trace you provided and there are no events firing for preconnects.

Thank you for the reply but I don't think it's a blocking issue.  I've got Data collector running and I don't see any extra server waits during the time when this occurs.  I'll look into it more today to make sure.

    - The problem happens throughout the day.  Although I noticed it didn't happen over the long weekend so it must have something to do with load.
    - It only affects users trying to log in at the time this is happening.  All users already connected don't have a problem.  The problem is only with the login sequence.  It doesn't drop existing connections.
    - The error message on the client side is that the server isn't responding (I'll try to get the exact error).  Error on the server side is contained in the ring buffer that I posted.
    - I have asked the network team if they saw anything in one of the timeframes that I had the problem.  They said there was nothing on the switch and no apparent dropped packets.  I gave up looking at a network problem a while ago because in one of the timeframes the server had a connection timeout to itself (don't know whether it was an agent job or the backup agent).
    - There are no errors in the application or system logs at the time of the problem.
    - There are no errors in the SQL log at the time of the problem.  The only reason I know about this is looking in the connection ring buffer.

  • I am also expecting that SQL server seems  busy at that time.

    • Can you plan to monitor CPU usage & memory usage in very short interval through out the day. SO that we can check the usage at time of issue?
    • Also Share top 10 waittype stats of SQL server.
    • When issue resurface, share the exact error message as well. Also check windoes evetn & SQL error log at that time as well

  • Which Service Pack of SQL 2008 are you on?

The problem appears vaguely familiar. I have not encountered it myself, but I seem to recall that my MVP colleagues having reported similar issues where a server for a while does not accept connections. I also seem to recall that there have been fixes for this problem in some service packs. ...but also that the problem may not be fixed entirely. If it is an SQL Server problem at all.

But if you are not on SP3, you may want to start there.

I did some Googling and I found
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqldataaccess/thread/52a8cf8f-f257-4a86-bbd9-309243f1948c

I don't know if the solutions mentioned in thread helps you, but it may be worth checking out.

The server is on SP2 right now, I'm planning an upgrade to SP3.

That thread you found is what I started with, thinking it was a network issue we explored all of those possibilities.  But as soon as I got an error where the server couldn't connect to itself I didn't think it could possibly be a network error.

  • Were you able to find the connect error from the server itself in the ring buffer? If the connection over shared memory, it cannot reasonably be network. But if it is over TCP, it could still be network related, for instance some spooky with the network library. Or multiple occurrances of the same IP address on the network maybe?

Were you able to catch the network error code in the 17830 error message?

  • I exactly the same problem watched on wireshark on a server 2016 VM with SQL Server 2016 and an Access Application.

Do you find the root cause?
