Expression Web 4 crashes with Windows 10 version 1709 - when inserting hyperlink RRS feed

  • Question

  • This problem started about a year ago. Currently I have EW on public version 1709 OS build 16299.19 and again the same installation and website on preview build 1709 OS build 17025.1000  I've installed trial version 4 from the Internet on both isolated computers (not from my purchased disc, but they are supposedly the same?). I use EW to create HTML5, CSS3, and PHP web site pages in code view, but I'm also converting some pages from EW and use some EW features compatible with modern standards.

On the public build the problem started several builds ago right after a Windows Update to a new version.  I tried lots of fixes, but none worked.  As a work-around, I started typing hyperlinks in by hand using both absolute or relative links as needed and all work.  After another Windows Update inserting hyperlinks with EW worked fine again.  Then another Windows Update just before 1709 and inserting hyperlinks crashes EW again.  After updating the public build to 1709 EW still crashes when selecting a folder when inserting hyperlinks.  On 11-8-17,  I tried fixes Option 1 & 2 in another thread on Microsoft Community and neither worked.  They recommended that I post the issue here.

One other issue (or maybe not?) is that there is not in the current public build the option to repair EW.  Uninstall is the only option. Reinstalling EW worked once on the public build, but it took so much time that I'm not wanting to use it again, especially since it's possible that future Windows Updates will continue to cause inserting hyperlinks to fail again.  I tried to repair from my purchased Microsoft Expression Studio 4 disc, which offers the repair option, but it just locks up.  I waited for at least 30 minutes, and it also locks up when cancelling the repair.

On the preview build I installed EW, as noted above, and inserting hyperlinks with EW is no problem.  After several O/S updates of the preview builds, inserting hyperlinks continues to work and the problem has never surfaced.  I thought the public build was supposed to be the more stable and reliable build, but if there is a known root cause for this issue or if I can help find it, that would be the best solution.

  • If a Windows update breaks  EW's link insertion dialog, and if you have GodMode set up, delete the GodMode folder.  Expression web link insertion will start working again.

Sometimes, you can then set up GodMode again, and EW will continue to work, and sometimes you can't.  I've had it happen both ways.

  • I verified your solution.  Inserting Hyperlinks works again.  This also explains why one computer wasn't affected.  I wasn't using GodMode and won't install it again.  It seemed like a harmless thing to have.  There must be an interesting story behind how this was discovered, or just common knowledge to experience programmers?  I guess we won't see GodMode offered in the Windows Store.

    Thanks for your solution,

  • Someone in another thread discovered the connection.  As to why there is that connection - who knows? Since EW development ceased several years ago, we may never know.

  • I have the same problem at the latest 1709 build, but I also have a few other minor problems since this build.  I have just installed it on my wife's PC, which is now at the same build level, but has far less junk than my PC and expression web works fine.  In my case it is a damaged build so I am intending to do a complete backup of my primary drive, then re install windows, but using the save my files and programmes route.

  • Unless you had GodMode on that computer, you did not have the same problem.  (Just saying.)

  • Thank you!  Your solution is a life saver!   I have wasted so much time reinstalling and trying everything until I found this thread.  It is definitely related to a W10 update (like so many other issues) and simply deleting the "God Mode" folder from my desktop fixed the issue.  Using Expression Web for anything without the ability to handle hyperlinks from folders is a real pain.

  • I do not have a God Mode folder so is there any other suggestion?

  • No.   It works for me on all three computers I have, latest Win 10, EW4.  We really can't tell you what is different about your computer.
