  • Question

  • I published my website and on the published site three ??? are displayed and I cannot find them in the code anywhere. They are in the uneditable areas of the .dwt in the upper left corner. The website is www.airsolutionsinc.com. I need some help to get rid of these.

  • When I view the source code of the page you linked to, I see this:

    ???<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html dir ="ltr" xmlns ="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" >

    <!-- #BeginTemplate "master.dwt" -->

    <head >

    etc.

    I'm not sure what's up, but you definitely have a doctype.

    Edit: That must be the problem. I can easily replicate this in that whatever I type before the doctype declaration shows up in the top left corner, in that same small text. Get rid of that and you should be fine.

  • While characters appearing like that are often a result of an issue with byte-order-marks, I've not heard what you are seeing, "???," discussed in this context.

  • I thought the same thing but the byte-order marks leaves a different signature.

  • I figured there was either a missing characterset declaration or the characterset for the page is conflicting with the one the server is configured to use.

  • When you view the source code, they're right before the doctype declaration. Out of curiosity, I created a new page in EW, added question marks before the doctype, saved, and previewed in my browser. Guess what I saw? Could it be that simple?

  • This is what the first 15 lines have in them:

    <head>
    <meta content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="Content-Type" />
    <!-- #BeginEditable "doctitle" -->
    <title></title>
    <!-- #EndEditable -->
    <link href="styles/style2.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    <style type="text/css">
    .style1 {
     font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
     color: #000000;
    }
    .style4 {
     color: #3D6C87;
    }

    I can't find the ??? typed anywhere.

  • "This is what the first 15 lines have in them:"

    Start looking at the top, please: those are not the first 15 lines or you wouldn't have a doctype or an <html> tag.  As Jim says, your displayed page starts with ???<!Doctype

  • I have had this before and it was an issue when copying code from another page.
    try copy all the text on this page - paste into simple text application - note book - recopy then paste back in

  • Thanks, everyone. I will try to work on this tonight.

  • I tried the copy and paste and it did not work. In the text application the ??? did not show up. I see them when I view the source on the website, but I can't find them in the code of the master.dwt of my website in Expression. I have searched everywhere.

    First 6 lines

    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html dir="ltr" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

    <!-- #BeginEditable  -->

  • Pin down when they are being added: Are they in the code of the pages, if not the dwt?  Are they not showing up until after you publish?  (Test it: make a change, verify the ??? are not in the Code View of the page, publish it, verify the change shows up on the site, and see if the ??? is there.)

  • They are not in the code of the pages and only show up when I publish to the site.

  • I can't offer any other suggestions than experimentation.

    Create a new file, not one from the DWT.  Publish it:  Look OK?
    Create a brand new DWT.  Make a page from it.  Publish it: Look OK?

    Actually, I believe it did work. Have you refreshed the page when you view it? The ??? is no longer there.

  • It was still there (yes, refreshed) when I posted my replies, but it's not there now for me either, so something was updated.
