WEC7 - how to turn off ALL Internet Explorer security zones?

Question

I'm sure there is some finesse way of doing this, but I'm running out of adult beverage...

I have a CE 5.0 app that uses the embedded IE control to display a 3rd party VBScript/Javascript application.  Yes, we use custom activeX controls, and like many embedded solutions, we don't do internet.

Along comes WEC7 and Internet Explorer's enhanced security.  How the f'k do I turn it off?  Completely?  I've found some links on setting up the assorted zones, but it's so obfuscated, it's incomprehensible.  So, I'll condense my question:

1) WEC7

2) HTML pages with custom activeX controls.

3) Settings in the registry that allow IE to load, use, execute the controls prompt free.

I want CE 5.0 behavior.

Clone and modify C:\WINCE700\public\ie7 to your needs.

Unfortunately, I don't have the BSP for the device - the OS was outsourced, our practice since 2004.  Modifying browser behavior seems a little extreme to me. 

It looks like the WEC 7 team borrowed the IE code to update WEC 7 without making any attempt at all to document or understand what the impact would be.  For those applications using LOCAL activeX controls, under the bus they went. Might be painting with a wide brush right now.  Most of my information for the IE7 update comes from Doug Boling's web presentation from long ago. 

What I have tracked down so far is that if I want my local activeX controls to run, I need settings in Zone 0 - a hidden zone, suppressed by the IE settings dialog.  This appears to be the beginning of the mind rot at Microsoft trying to help us, but to hide things from embedded developers is silly.  Anyway, I rant.  Have a nice week.

This is embedded, so nothing is extreme (although from some viewpoints everything is extreme).

I'm afraid it is your only way out of this...

Well this should get interesting.  I've touched base with a past supplier, and he see's nothing in platform builder that would adjust this behavior.  I'll keep plodding along.

It won't be a catalog item in Platform Builder. He'll need to look into the IE7 code in C:\WINCE700\public\ie7.

Ah ok.  I'm new to PB.  Thanks.

I installed PB yesterday, and it appears to have nuked my VS 2008 installation to the extreme.  Can't debug any of my applications now.  Sigh.

You can do a repair to VS to fix that up.

hey IOT girl, long time no post from me.  :)  I tried the repair, it burped, so I used a restore point.  Very annoying.

So, Platform Builder breaks VS2008, repair fixes it and then both co-exist peaceably?

Yes but you do need SP1 applied to VS2008 :)
